Ok - finished reading the light novel translation by Mazui and I must say that I thought it was very enjoyable! Well worth the read - and I am very inetersted to see what they are going to do with the movie production.

Man, that ending was beautiful (as expected)!!
Spoiler for Ending response, read at your own risk:
I know there were alot of criticism over Fauna's VA when the movie first came out, but I thought she did pretty well still. Honestly, I don't have much to talk about the movie, this is mostly just a bump to let people know the movie's out (Hotarubi no Mori e too!!!! Which made for a ... pretty ... interesting weekend). Highly recommended for various reasons. |

It was rather generic and unambitious for the most part but enjoyable in a way. Kinda tired of WW2 themes though. And it can't say the voice acting was particularly great, either.
Overall, I'd give it a high 6/low 7.

I blogged this one, liked it quite a bit. It may be cliché, but I prefer "timeless" - a very simple story told beautifully. I'm also a sucker for animations that are lover letters to aviation, and this very much falls into that category. Madhouse is producing some very fine work, theatrically and for TV.
Spoiler for Ending (sort of):

That was interesting. Not massively stellar, I mean, The Sky Crawlers it wasn't, but it was just good solid character driven entertainment. In some ways it reminded me of Porco Rosso.
Did like the flying scenes, and before anyone accuses them of ripping off the aforementioned Sky Crawlers for the shape of the enemy fighters, let me just point out that towards the end of WWII both the USAF, Luftwaffe and Japanese air forces were experimenting with canard designs, which both this film and the other are riffing off. Canards are cool, I used to see a Rutan Long-EZ now and again at Biggin Hill, and when it was waiting at the hold in a line of PA28s and Cessnas it looked like something from another planet. Spoiler for Ending:
So yes, a good solid entertaining movie, which didn't drag for an instant. Last edited by Dop; 2012-03-07 at 18:55. |

Well ... having read the English translation of the light novel before seeing the movie, and I thought it was a pretty good adaptation overall though the LN was much, MUCH better for me.
Still, overall a job well done, methinks. I especially liked the lovely lullaby (ED) ... am a sucker for such things anyway. I would give it a 7.5 out of 10.

I thought it was a fantastic movie, though I may be a bit biased since I have a thing for airplanes.
By the way should we change the name of the thread seeing as how the movie was released under a different title than the novel it was based off of? There may be people who have seen the movie but aren't familiar with the title of the original novel. |

Well, the novel was 100x better. I can agree with some additions and changes but not with the omissions.
Everyone should read the novel, it's one volume and a fantastic read. It was the symbolism of it!

Another bittersweet ending, why do i keep bumping into these stories? Anyway, great movie.
And Fana is probaly the first character that looks even better after the haircut. Usually losing the long hair is a downgrade but not for her. And Charles really is made of steel, to be able to resist the charms of that drunken princess |
