What are some good serious animation?

Somewhere in the same league as Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Monster etc?

Ergo Proxy is good and serious, but the story is its trump card: the animation by far is unsatisfactorily vapid more or less, IMO. But it has a great story, more or less - just that the animation is quite eeehhh ...

Zipang - a war story about a J-SDF AEGIS cruiser sucked back in time to WW2.
Mushishi - a set of short stories about a man who helps out other people who have problems with fantastical creatures known as Mushi. Its more medical in its nature, and the stories of the victims can often be quite tragic, mixed in with hope. Its hard to describe just how good this show is.
Rurouni Kenshin/Samurai X - Trust & Betrayal - unlike the TV series, this is hardcore stuff.
Yugo Negotiator - I haven't seen this one, but its been recommended to me. A modern day story of a man who visits the worlds trouble spots.
Crest of the Stars - You liked LOGH, heres the other really good space anime. You might also want to consider Starship Operators; Its got a strange start (despite the interest in the story, its hard to empathise with the characters, and there is somethign of a 'encounter of the week vibe'), but it has potential and some people says it improves a lot as it develops.

Hmm, serious shows....

Witch Hunter Robin - Very little comedy throughout the show. A serious and mature plot about humans hunting other humans with "witch" powers.

Now and then, here and there - Very mature and quite emotional.

Macross Zero - Watched this a while ago, but it was a great short 5 episode series.

Juuni Kokuki - Very serious and strenuous anime. A girl and two of her friends are sucked back hundreds of years into the past (and another dimension). Definitely a tear jerker at times.

Gungrave - Two kids from a poor neighborhood join the mafia. Decently paced and very serious.

I also recommend Zipang and Kenshin like Laughing Manji said.

Lots of great, serious anime out there.

Ghost in the Shell is definitely serious, and if you like LoGH, I think you'll like GitS, too. Two TV shows and two movies. (The movies are seperate from the TV series.)

Area 88 is a short series about a guy who's forced to be a mercenary fighter pilot. Told more from the angle of the photographer who's job it is to photograph him when he dies.

Blood: The Last Vampire is a 30 minute OVA, and the basis for the Blood+ TV series, which is also pretty serious. A bit gory, but it doesn't step across the line into campiness.

Gunslinger Girl is a short series about a group of pre-teen girls who've all been physically enhanced and brainwashed to become assassins. It's not really oriented toward action, though that's certainly an element.

Wings of Honneamise is a movie about one man's journey to be the first in space during a time when his country is at war with another's.

Speaking of space, PLANETES is another great series that happens to also paint space flight and life in space with a very realistic brush.

Kino's Journeys is serious, and it's even better if you can enjoy the political commentary that underlies each episode. Where as in LoGH, Yang Winley debates with himself the merits of democracy vs. dictatorship, each episode in Kino's Journey is a look at what various social ideas can lead to.

If you'd like something a little more interpretive, I'd say check out Magnetic Rose and Cannon Fodder on the DVD titled Memories. You'll probably also enjoy Stink Bomb, but that one has a very humorous premise. Cannon Fodder is particularly interesting in that the story's told visually. No dialogue.

Okay, those, along with what others have already suggested, should be plenty to get you started.
