Talk about fanservice!
Are you talking about the 'Nice Boat' incident that happened in the States? If so, nah, the Japanese don't care what happens over here enough to put it in an anime.

What got most people upset over this episode was when Kotonoha cut Sekai up to see whether there's a fetus or not. Even though we may never be able to confirm whether Sekai was telling the truth or not about her pregnancy, the camera perspective gave the impression that the Sekai's unborn child itself was witnessing the womb being cut open.

Coupled with the line "There's no one inside" that Kotonoha says at the end, the camera perspective became one of horror because of the impression that Kotonoha would be leaving behind a still alive being that will soon die because she believes that there is 'no one' there.

It's like watching someone leaving a burning house thinking that there's no one left but only you know there's still a child sleeping in the basement. Yet you are powerless to do anything or rescue the child. The horror of leaving an innocent behind to perish is a powerful emotion.

I have yet to watch the raw, but from what I have seen from the screen shots, I would say it is not a bad ending to such an anime. I would say it is better than most other animes ending around this time, especially the infamous "Claymore" and "Zero no Tsukaima" (both have horrible endings after raising the expectation of most audience).

These being said, I'd say this ending is a little bit too much. Actually, the same could be said of the whole TV series. The TV story was based on the original game but raised to several notches higher. Many story lines were interwined and it reached a dramatic climax in the 10 and 11 episode. The ending just cannot be at the same level as the game endings (some of which already very shocking). It has to exceed it. By exceeding it, the TV story went over the reality. Consider the game endings, although some of them really astonishing, they are realistic, while the TV ending is not. It is dramatic, and the nice boat scene is very beautiful. I think most audience will like this ending. However, I have to say, the TV series is more on the artistic side but not on its realistic side.

There's no one to rescue. Even if she was pregnant (and I personally believe she wasn't) the fetus can't survive.
I believe the camera view was NOT implying the presence of a fetus, but rather the only way to show a disembowelment without actually displaying too much gore. It's a technical issue, imho.

Someone in 4-chan created the term. But it was the Japanese people in 2-chan who turned it into a meme. So it's technically Japanese.

About the "nice boat"... I am a little bit curious whether that is a coincidence or not.

Maybe the producer rushed the scene into the final episode, or kanegawa TV station intentially used a "nice boat" scenary program for the neta of the final episode.

By any measurement, it appears that "nice boat" will be a popular catchphrase for quite a while among Anime fans......

If Sekai was pregnant, would ATX have been allowed to show this at 10:30PM? If it does show 15+ shows I don't think that would include something like this (I'm sure it's the same for HBO/Showtime here in the US).

The ambiguity lets them get away with it probably.

I don't believe there was a fetus as well since we don't have enough information to properly deduce whether Sekai was really pregnant or not. But by utilizing a first-person camera perspective from Sekai's body, it suggests to the audience that there was one. Again I'm not saying that there was one or not; just that the camera perspective is effective enough to give that kind of impression to viewers, which makes it unnerving since it's like seeing the last thing before you die.

Like you say, it's also can be a technical issue to show the disembowelment without the gore but sometimes, what's not shown on screen can be even more chilling and scary than what's on screen. The final minutes of the Blair Witch Project movie nicely examplifies this.

I personally loved the episode, I think they got what they deserved. And did anyone else notice that they up-played the killing of Makoto more than it did in the game?

Are you forgetting that HBO is the station that, if you live on the west coast, plays porn at 21:30?

True, but killing pregnant girls is a completely different situation.

I remember there was an episode of Masters of Horror that Showtime wouldn't show because of this.

According to the people who went to the special screening, the AT-X broadcast was edited heavily. In the uncut version, not only was the blood was red, there were no flashbacks during the Makoto stabbing scene (they showed a lot more of where she stabbed him), they actually showed Makoto's head in the bag, and there were apparently some noises added to the baby-confirmation scene.

The checking pregnancy part is absolutely disgusting and unnecessary. Without it we still know that Kotonoha was beyond repair at that stage.

At least she survived Makoto ... If I remember correctly, Makoto had relationship with Kokoro in Summer Days...
