First one that comes into mind is Last Exile.
Then there are all your anime movies, of which few are manga based. Then there are those which are based off games/dating sims/H-games, like Air. Anime based on manga isn't as large a sector as one may think. |

I believe Noein is an original story like Ergo Proxy.
Another group of anime derive from novels. Curiously the three that I've enjoyed most were all written by women and set in fictitious Asian (usually Chinese) settings. These include the well-known Juuni Kokki (aka "Twelve Kingdoms") and two current series, Saiunkoku Monogatari and Seirei no Moribito ("Guardian of the Sacred Spirit"). All three authors gave their stories strong and intriguing female protagonists, too.

IIRC, Escaflowne started as anime and the manga versions were released afterwards. Unlike Evangelion though, the manga adaptations sucked hardcore.
I believe that anime series are more likely to be based on material from other media than OAVs or movies. Makoto Shinkai's works (Voices of a Distant Star, The Place Promised in Our Early Days) were originally in video and the manga adaptations by Yumeka Sumomo (under the pen name "Mizu Sahara") only came afterwards.

Cyber Formula pretty, it is a racing anime in future and it is pretty old but OVA are not that old. Double One game out one 92, Zero came in 1994, don't know about saga, and Sin came in 98.
As said in above Gundam is also not based on manga.

Mai-Hime and Mai-Otome manga is original and anime first.. they both have manga, but the story is different.
And most Gundam (maybe all) is original. Fafner, GunxSword, Heat Guy J, Blood+, Figure 17, Galaxy Angels, Nadesico, Infinite Ryvius, Solty Rei, Gunbuster 1 & 2, Arjuna, Avenger, FLCL, Nanoha, Battle Athletes... the list could go on and on... Just out of curiosity, why did you ask for original animes? |

a lot of these bones series: kurau: the phantom memory, eureka7, scrapped princess, wolf's rain (some of these have mangas but i think they came out afterwards)
then others: gungrave (based on a game), kemenozume, trigun (i think the anime came out before the manga), paranoia agent |

Just trying to see if there was a pattern. Something which could let you tell "oh, this is an original anime". Telling if an anime is based out of an H-game is not difficult. But I'm not seeing any pattern here
And while at it, I get to discover some series I've never heard of before |

Nanoha doesn't really count in this case because it's a spinoff from an erogame (Triangle Heart) which is also a short oav anime. So it's not from manga, sure, but it is a derivative work still. However, what they've done with Nanoha blows Triangle Heart out of the water imho, and it might as well be treated as an original work now, since it's basically just Nanoha herself and some other characters that were taken from the games.
And yes, Air is originally an erogame as well as Kanon and DC |

Anime not based on manga, games or novels? Some of these might already have been listed, but OTOH:
* Vandread * Witch Hunter Robin * Big O * Cowboy Bebop * Please Teacher * Please Twins * Tsukikage Ran: Carried by the Wind * Heat Guy J * Stellvia * Kiddy Grade * Gravion * Goddanar * Rahxephon * Divergence Eve (& Misaki Chronicles) That's all I can come up with right now; some of these do have manga and novel adaptations, but it's the anime that came first, not the other way around. |
