The Studio Ghibli films are an excellent start for the collection. Recognised and admired throughout the world, you should check them out.

Can't remember them all but heres some....

The Cat Returns
Porco Rosso
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
My Neighbor Totoro
Laputa: Castle in the Sky
Howl's Moving Castle
Nausicaa Vally of the Winda
Kiki's Delivery Service

All suitable for children and even for adults a like. Well known for being really good family films, even have moral messages.

I also suggest checking out decent review sites for it, avoid stuff like animenfo where idiots write reviews.

Edit. Forgot to add, the brilliance in these anime are the brilliance of the standard of animation, mixed with the great story telling and beautiful soundtracks.

Byousoku 5 cm - Maybe kids don't get it, but make them watch it! It's a masterpiece.
Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo
Kiki's Delivery Service - When I was younger I watch it, and it was awesome, it's a movie for kids.
Spirited Away - Nice movie, is Sci-Fi ~

When you say movies. You dont mean movies that is following any other anime?

The Studio Ghibli is just awsome. If they have made it, its awsome.

Samurai X isn't really a film and certainly isn't for kids, oh and is extremely highly over rated for some strange reason. Seriously it was never this popular a couple of years ago. *pokes own eye*.

It may be overrated, but it's perfect in every way. I wouldn't hesitate to give that anime a 10/10 and only a very few can achieve that.

Anyways, Shinkai's work doesn't have anything that's bad for children, but its level of understand isn't for children. I had to re-watch Place Promised a few times to understand completely what was going on and the dream-like/reality conflict/alternate was very confusing and very well-done.

I'd still say that most (probably all) of Ghibli films (maybe not Grave of the Fireflies for the same reason as Shinkai films) are good and Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo is all audiences that knows the difference between living and death.

You're thinking of "Only Yesterday", which IMHO is one of the weakest Ghibli movies. It hasn't been given an official US release yet AFAIK.

Another Ghibli movie worth checking out is Ocean Waves, which also doesn't have a US release yet. Kids might find it boring, however.
