All the non-witches hardware was nice.

My point was more the difference between a war/magical girl anime and a sports anime with tanks.

Yea, and that's exactly the difference here. Tanks, Live Ammo... but not very serious here. Absolutely no hinting of death here... even when a tank is at risk of falling off a bridge.

Not quite. Strike Witches may use magical, fictional hardware for the Witches themselves, but many still use real world aircraft as a base. And the real hardware that are presented in the show are detailed to the point of OCD. See obscure examples like a WW2 vintage mobile kitchen being put in.

Many of the enemy Neuroi are also sometimes based on real aircraft, mostly failed prototypes like the Focke-Wulf Triebflugel.

By "care", I'm talking about how Girls und Panzer treats the hardware with respect, and shows off what they're capable of. In Strike Witches, the hardware is either used as fodder or used to make the Witches look good. There's a vast gulf in how they're portrayed.

The comparisons between SW and GuP also initially were drawn, pre-airing, because of the (relatively few, but interesting) production crew carryovers.

But no, the shows aren't that similar at all.

Strike Witches Pantsu: Eventually you get used to it.

Girls und Panzer uses World War II technology as part of the game in a form of historical re-enactment. Strike Witches uses World War II technology because it's actually set during the early 1940s.

Also, do note that in the anime, at least, the tanks are being shot at with beams.

Contrast this to the manga, where not everything is beamspam and conventional weapons can work (the Flak 88, in particular, is an excellent anti-Neuroi weapon).

SW is actually in 1940s during WW2, they can't have MiG-31, SU-47 or F-35 v.v..., but because alien invasion, world fight them together. While GuP is the future with WW2 tank sport with human vs human and no magic or witches.

Something that occurred to me as I was watching Eps 11 and 12 again, this time with better translations.

THere's been much joking on how the distances between the tanks suddenly increased when Miho made her jump... but then I recalled what her orders were: Leopon crosses upstream, Rabbit downstream, so that they won't get washed away by the river.

Looking at that river, it's apparently flowing at a decent clip.

I now wonder if perhaps it was enough to cause the tanks to slowly drift apart, widening the gap...

I was under the impression it was supposed to be about young girls fighting Neuroi and their friendships, with the fanservice being uh ... the extra.

Negated by the scenes that follow Miho's jump, where we see the tanks again very close to each other, and their distances not that great. Also, if the current was strong enough to push the tanks, they'd push them against each other, not away from each other.

I heard rumors, but witnessing the real thing is a vastly different experience. I have learned my lesson and quite speechless.

Yes, but I was making a simple comparison of equipment, which are pretty much the same hardware despite the way they are utilized in their respective verse. Last time I checked, the shells in GuP aren't paintballs. What does this mean? It means a crossover may be feasible. Thats all.

Fixed that for you. And no, I'm pretty sure the fanservice is considered integral to that series. You can choose to overlook it; watching the series despite the fanservice rather than because of the fanservice; but that doesn't alter the fact that the fanservice is one of the primary things Strike Witches is built around.

It's not so bad in the other spinoffs of Strike Witches...

...Well, a couple of manga got cancelled due to girls kissing other girls, and Soumnus Misfits has Beurling snapping Haruka out of being brainwashed by flying up to Tomoe Gozen of the Fuso Sea and slashing at her with a kukri, resulting in said slashee to realise that 1) she's still alive, 2) she's cold, and 3) she's naked.

According to Beurling, bare skin and a pair of Strikers is an unbeatable outfit.
