I'm addicted to this series and naru is so hot *fangirl moment* Does anyone know which manga volume the series leaves off on??? They really do need a second season their are too many unawnsered questions..How did it fair in Japan?

The anime stopped at the end of the manga's volume 9. I don't know how the series did in Japan. It had an unfortunate timing. It aired the same season as Death Note did. I don't know how well it did against such strong competition.

Too add to what LKK-Sensei said, it left off at vol 9 because at the time that was the last vol out. Thankfully its now up to vol 11 with probably one more to wrap everything up. And then if we all pray to the gods of anime we might, just might get another season. But Id be shocked if it happened anytime soon.

I thought that all of the original novels came out before the manga and anime so if we don't have another season yet I don't think we're seeing one. Shame since it was a nicely structured series.

All the novels did come out before the anime; you're right. However, the anime was clearly based off the manga rather than the novels in my opinion. Here's why I think this.

Spoiler for anime, manga, & novel differences:

1) The anime left out some characters (friends of Mai) that are in the novels but not in the manga.

2) The anime's scenes were often direct transpositions of the manga's panels.

3) Another piece of evidence that the manga was the anime source and not the novels are the Park Ghost and the Christmas stories. Neither of those cases are in the novels. They were created for the manga in order to fill page space so that the books would be the proper length. If the anime were using the novels as the source, those cases shouldn't have been included.

4) However to me, the most important evidence that the manga was the animator's source and not the novels is the omission of conversations referring to a particular character. This character has an important role in manga volumes 10+ but prior to volume 10, the character is discussed but isn't important to the series' events. If the animators were working off the novels, the conversations concerning that character would have been included because they would have known how important the character becomes. However, if the animators were going off the manga only, they likely did not know how important that character is to the series' conclusion. Because of this, I bet the animators did not have any real idea of how the novel series ends. The manga must have been the source of their information.

Because they used the manga as the source, I have hopes that we might one day see the conclusion to the series once the manga reaches it end. I personally have my fingers crossed for an OVA as I don't think another season is feasible given what remains.

Even more so seeing as though the DVD's are pretty cheap here.

Good points and I think I know which character they left out since I have a friend whose read the novels and wikipedia seems to know a lot on the topic (plus on ANN one of the reviewers commented that one character wasn't explained).

@LKK-Sensei, I love your point #4 since you explained it very well but made sure to not put in anything spoilertastic I do have a curiousity about how much JC knew about it cuz it does seem very odd if they didnt know what the novels had why take out what they did, I mean its very specific stuff, I want to believe they did it for a reason more then they just didnt know how the manga would end.

I hope the manga doesn't end any time soon- I love naru attachment to mai -even if it is somewhat subtle, but then again if fuyumi ono ends it ...I hope she gets back to completing twelve kingdoms either way I don't want it to end! Why doesn Inuyasha get to have a ton of episodes and we don't get any for the anime that's really worrth it... .It's just not fair~~~

The novel series is done at least the series the manga is based off of so probably only 1 more vol of the manga will be out. InuYasha isn't based on anything aside from the manga which is very very long so that's why it'll always have more epis. Plus shouen manga is like that GH is shoujo.

Also Ono Fuyumi is the novelist not the mangaka, that's Inada-sensei.

The dolls in that episode are called hitogata. Hitogata are not made up. They are a real part of Japanese culture. You can see an example of a hitogata at this English web page from the city of Kyoto where a local shrine can provide you with a protective hitogata.
