I was kind of bored to tears with episode 21 and found it frankly kind of stupid for a number of reasons. I don't know if it was meganekko's instant 13 orphans out of the blue, Yuki's taco induced winning streak, the silly cliche picnic scene or the heterochromia captain and Hisa's match, but nothing this episode really seemed exciting at all. I think this current tournament arc just needs to end already is what it is. We've already had the climatic match between Saki and Koromo so it really doesn't feel like there's much of anything left here to do that matters all that much besides winning. And this show has always felt like it's been about a bit more than just winning the game up until now (I mean granted there was that whole bit about heterochromia captain wanting to play Hisa again one more time, but has that really been all that relevant up until now and will it ever be relevant again?) like a lot of the sport and sport like shows do. Hence this individual tournament portion feels just kind of tacked on and pointless. We've already seen everything these characters have to offer, so I say bring on the national level already. Prefererrably sooner rather than later.

The GonzoPicture Magic Invitational is pretty much because they got ahead of the manga so now they need to fill up the cour since they already paid for it. They can't move on to the nationals because the manga isn't there yet.

Well, 21 was titled "Looking Back" (or probably better in hindsight "Recollection"), and I think it was designed as a dual purpose episode:

1. To set up the finals for the individuals
2. As a flashback episode that masqueraded as new material.

So yeah, the episode was all stuff you've seen before. And that was the point. Remember, this is a shounen tournament anime: The episode after the end of the tournament always contains a highlights of the previous tournament episode.

So think of the individuals more as a glorified highlight real of the past 13 eps instead of original material and it's actually really amazing... Well, compared to the usual clip episode.
