When he faces humans, he loses that sense of comfort and is easily subjected to fear, doubt, cowardice and whatnot.
More importantly, his train of thoughts on the subject feels very human, sounds ordinary and lacks the "super cool" factor that defines most badass characters.

Actual "badasses" storm through all sort of adversities no matter what, as long as they have the motivation (they are idiots deep within). Shinobu isn't like that ... he's just a teenager who's used to supernatural creatures.
