"Isn't Anime for kids?" How do you respond?
For a brief response, that it is a medium that covers a variety of different genres that can appeal to people within a wide age-range. For anybody who then continues with the topic, I tend to give a couple of examples based on what I've seen, with the caveat that I'm an SF and fantasy fan so have seen more anime of that ilk. If hypothetical person then wants any recommendations, I try go with the sort of things people like. |

I just don't try and argue with those people any more. There is no point to it because they refuse to listen other wise. You say you wanna show them an example of a more mature anime they refuse. You give arguments of why they are wrong and the blow it of. You can't win an argument when someone refuses to listen. It's not worth my energy.

Just show them a few clips from certain series. You can change their mindset fairly quick, if you choose right. On the other hand, the stubborn type probaly couldn't even explain their own reasoning beyond going in a circle, so there's no point in dealing with them. I consider myself lucky that I haven't really been asked this question though. Though I am familiar with people making stupid assumptions about stuff though.

My usual response is "Yes, it is, in fact, for children. You should totally look up how childish Bible Black is. If I had kids, I would be more comfortable if they watched that show than Mr. Roger's Neighborhood. I swear, that old man is too trustworthy."

Yeah, anime has got to be the most stigmatized form of fiction, though I don't quite understand why. Is it just because it's animated? There's so much creativity that it allows for... Also, I appreciate that in fighting animes there is SO much going on beyond the level of the physical act, whereas if you watch most action movies it's usually just the physical, one guy versus a million and he predictably defeats them all in one swing. The outcomes of the fights there are predictable - but in anime (good anime) not only is there a lot more to the fights, techniques, abilities, etc., but they try to make it so that it's unpredictable who's going to win, and not obvious that the good guy is going to win even when s/he does.

This thread refuses to die.
Please read through the earlier responses before posting. Most everything anyone might say on this subject has already been said. In general, unless your answer is something other than, "no, anime isn't just for kids," there's really little to add.

animes are not just cartoons. my old man never watches cartoons, yet he loves dbz.
also, the only way i can convince my m8s to watch anime is by saying "dbz is an anime". Last edited by leo786; 2008-09-14 at 11:52. |
