Looks like my "fanservice for the lolicons" guess was accurate enough then. I can only hope they don't waste as much time on it as the episode's title would imply. I mean, I love Rin as a character and all, but seeing her toddler self go on little filler adventures is about the last thing I wanna see take up air time in Fate/Zero.

I was hoping she'd run into Kirei. I love whenever they talk, so fun.

However, I don't really think it's pandering to fans (okay, not totally!), as much as pacing before the season break. With presumably 2-3 eps to go before the break, if they add one padding episode, that leaves 1-2 to cover the climactic events at the end of volume 2, putting us squarely halfway through the novel series. I might have chosen to structure it a little differently, but I can see how it makes sense. |

Non-H fan-service... we haven't seen this for a really long time... though with Uryuu showing up can turn H/gore/censored very quickly |

Ninth War: Master and Servant
I cringed at Sola, because her intentions towards Kayneth making him to hand over his command seals to her were far disturbing and vicious. She's fell for Lancer since the first time she mad eye-contact with the latter.
This is likely due to Lancer's natural charm, but those dead-eyes gazing at Kayneth, as if waiting to slam a cold knife gently into his skull, gave me nightmares. She's obsessed with Lancer as a man of her ideal affections. So, reading from Lancer's flashbacks, he's too involved with his own tale of tragedy, and whatever reasons he willfully accept to enter the Holy Grail War were not to have his history of the past repeat itself, but to properly serve his Lord; the chance to serve his Lord as a prideful Knight. While their masters hold different ideas, I'm honest to say that Saber and Lancer share empathic qualities in common that make them similar to a certain extent. - Both are Knights serving to their utmost pride and faithful devotion, and both having their own personal tales of tragedies that continue to haunt them both. Changing topics, while I do feel bad for Saber we must put ourselves into Kiritsugus' shoes and see all worst-case scenario and analyzing with cold minds their assessed situation. War is not about making friends but to be wary of treachery; innocence would be inevitably crushed by the fires of war. Furthermoe, saving children was not an intended goal for which Kiritsugu was employed by the Einzberns. He has to win the Holy Grail War in the most efficient methods, even if other mages or Saber disagree with his methods as impure and dishonorable. The major threat for Kiritsugu is Kotomine, so he must have to find a way out to win the war without engaging Kotomine until the tables can be turned to Kiritsugu's favor. But, this episode wasn't alone for those two masters and servant, because the most appreciated development came with both Rider and Waver. Of all servants, those two are able to engage in casual comradeship and having this natural empathy to get quite well along due to their opposite personalities. What's more Waver exerting his skills to deduce Caster's position from analyzing the water components was a solid display of his true capacities, and he shouldn't understimate himself so badly. He should listen and pay close attention more to Rider's praising him. Waver's got his way of being a mage, but his low self-confidence prevents him to realize his full potential. If only witnessing the leftovers from inspecting Caster's carnage upon those poor children, I can hope he'll eventually mature to be more assertive in this war. |
