Deep compelling messages? Oh what the heck
+ Da Capo (Both seasons has 26 eps. each) + Fate/Stay Night (24 eps) + Shakugan no Shana (24 eps) + Suzuka (26 eps) + Shuffle! (24 eps) + Maria-sama Ga Miteru (Both seasons has 13 eps. each) + Strawberry Panic (26 eps) + Utawarerumono (26 eps) + Canvas 2 (24 or 26 eps [Not sure but it can't exceed 26]) + Elemental Gelade (26 eps) ---> That's all I can think of. If you have questions, just ask

Bokura ga Ita (currently running) is a lot like KareKano. It's supposed to end at 26 episodes.
If you want to give something that's mostly slice of life (and without a ton of comedy) a try, Twin Spica is an excellent series. It's about a little girl who wants to go to space, and her friend Lion-san. |

actually the anime i'm looking for need not be "deep" or "intellectual" or "compelling"
it's just the 4th criterion, in addition to slice of life, comedy or drama... in other words, any medium-short length anime similar/related to those that i have mentioned in the list... arigatou |

Try xxxHolic. Its only 24 epi, episodic, fantasy, comedy, mystery. It has some philosophical references as well as japanese folklores.
Serial Experiment Lain - its old and make the viewer think a lot |

Planet ES is both deep and compelling, you might not think so after the first episode or two but trust me, from the middle to the end of the series it delves deep into both the human psyche and realistic problems that humans will face in the near future because of space travel.

Kamichu!
Aria the Animation/Aria the Natural Both are slice-of-life, episodic, and can invoke some deep feelings every once in a while (mostly Aria on the point) |
