I really liked the new episode. I thought the pacing was nice, and there was a lot happening and to digest. The only thing I didn't like was that the episode ended before Luffy said anything. Such a cliffhanger!
For one, it looks like Luffy will gain the support of the Happo Navy. Bartolomeo is a huge fan of Luffy, so he will probably end up being Luffy's ally. There is something going on with Aokiji, which causes the Blackbeard pirates to be weary. Maybe Aokiji gave them information from Punk Hazard and what Doflamingo is doing? Then we get Rebecca with a glimpse of her back-story. She was poor, and her mother probably died trying to get them food. I'm guessing she tried to kill Luffy because she wanted to win the Fire Fire Devil Fruit. She wants to destroy Doflamingo; however, she did not know that her goals slightly align with Luffy's. I'm guessing Luffy will release the gladiators at some point, and Rebecca will help with the fight against Doflamingo. Also, I have a feeling that Luffy will eventually give Rebecca the Fire Fire Devil Fruit, although it still makes more sense to give it to someone that will be a part of the Straw Hat crew.

IMHO what they really need (and have needed for a long, long time) is a strong, skilled undersea swimmer in the crew. So Jinbe might be next, but Jinbe is also kind of a boring character whose character development is behind him so I'm hoping someone else will be revealed that can take up the role. Of course that also means that whoever it is can't have a DF ability, unless there's some kind of rule hax that allows someone to have a DF ability and the ability to swim at the same time. |

Looks like Bartolomeo is pretty impressed by Luffy.
Didn't think he was even capable of that kind of emotion. So Luffy now has an big fan ^^" Bartolomeo was totally ROFL It was weird seeing him act like that. Still, it was funny and fun at the same time. Luffy's ability to eat at the weirdest situations amazes me every time. Looks like he got himself another mission.. Luffy sure was popular this time. He totally hogged the spotlight.

Since so far, there are not any candidates that we currently know of in this arc that adds to the crew, I don't think they will add anyone right now. However, as I mentioned in my previous post, there is the chance that instead of adding crew members, they can start to develop allies. It started with Trafalgar Law, and now there is a chance with the Happo Navy and Bartolomeo. By the end of this arc, who knows how many other allies the Straw Hats could add.

Wasn't Violet's ability aquatic-themed? I seem to recall her producing water of some kind in her brief power showcase.
At any rate, even if there was a water DF user they would probably just lose their ability when they hopped into the sea and sink like always. If seastone handcuffs can hold someone with Caesar's ability, then I kind of doubt a water ability would make a difference. |

I'm guessing that the toy soldier has to be either Rebeccas dad or her mother, who has been looking after her since she was little.
I loved Bartolomeos fanboy reactions to Luffy and I have to say I'm surprised he hasn't yet asked a toy if they can poop.

So Rebecca is the granddaughter of the former king. Her mom, Scarlett, looks exactly like Nami. I don't know if that has any relevance, or is it just that designs are similar.
I like the pacing and story this episode. The episode actually started earlier than usual, at around 3:40 ish than the usual 5 minute mark. As for Rebecca getting persecuted for being the grandchild of someone big (king), Luffy is probably not going to stand for that. He didn't like it that he was getting persecuted for being Garp's grandson, especially considering that they are opposite spectrum of the law. Not only that, Luffy is very grateful for people who provide him food, no matter how badly they might treat him. I'm concerned how Rebecca will survive D block, but hopefully, from what we can see, it might be a weak block. It's weird how Doflamingo was allowed to overthrow the king and the type of persecution that followed, considering that the king in a lot of ways should be similar to the world nobles, those dragon guys. Either way, this part of the story seems like a reference to how communism raised to power, with overthrowing the rich, promises to the poor, and execution of the rich for being rich (even if the rich was providing jobs) without regards to if the rich ever did anything bad or not. I wonder if that was intentional on the author's part.

Wish the weirdness with the toys would got explained some more.
Rebecca's story was a mix of sadness & tragedy. Lucky that tin soldier took care of her. I'm guessing he might be her dad? Even if the whole episode was about her, it was still interesting. Can't wait to see her fight next time.

I'm guessing the Toy Soldier is related to Rebecca, but I think he is not her father. It's true that we don't see her father, but the interaction between the toy soldier and Scarlett did not seem close.

I've been re-watching One Piece all over from the beginning again and it reminded me of some things here and there. The interesting thing about this arc is how much it draws parallels with Alabasta. Doflamingo is basically just a successful version of Crocodile, and Rebecca is what would have become of Vivi if Luffy and everyone hadn't been there. It would be cool if the story acknowledged that a little at some point.
That said, I'm a little let down by Rebecca's backstory for two reasons: 1) for all the stretching out they've done in this arc, this particular story felt too short on explanation, and 2) they already revealed the plot point that the toys used to be human, so you're already expecting Toy Soldier to be someone she knows from somewhere. With that in mind I don't know if the eventual reveal is going to be anything special. But then Oda has surprised me before (many times), so we'll see. I also don't like that Rebecca and Cavendish are the only people to be highlighted in D Block. Hopefully when things get started there will be just as many interesting characters to see as the other blocks. |
