even with the taxes you would still be more then satisfied with your winnings, If i was 18 I would try it out my self. hehe I say never mind of statistics and odds, haven't you watched Yu-Gi-Oh? You have too use the heart of the cards! or in this case heart of the ticket!

Risk vs reward. If I don't buy a ticket, I'm 100% guaranteed to keep my $1. If I play, I have a 1 in 176 million chance (though I don't see where they got that number, as assuming it uses the same 42 numbers I'm accustomed to seeing on lotteries your chances are actually 1 in 3,776,965,920 (that's over 3.7 billion, people)) of winning. According to that article, the average of winning over not winning and splits, results in a total of $1.23 (though the article they reference says $0.90). That's pre-tax. Take out the taxes and it comes closer to $0.50. Considering the odds, I'll keep my dollar, thank you.

Well... 1 million isn't that much (really, it isn't) when you start parsing out what can be purchased and what is taxed. But just like the "1%" issue, once you get past a a certain pile of millions there's a non-linear effect of simply there not being enough different things to *buy*. Prudent people usually create funds for research, the arts, public improvement, etc.

Depending of the lotery, here there's one than add more lots when the jackpot go over 50 millions, so if the jackpots is supposed to be 56 millions, they draw 7 combinations, 1 regular for the 50 millions, and 6 special for the special lot of 1 million only.

Well, it's not like the numbers are selected from a pool of what people picked, guaranteeing a win. You have the same odds in any given lottery. The only difference is if you win a small one, odds are you're the only winner. If you win a big one, many people may be sharing it with you.

Bear saves man from mountain lion.
Are you sure bears always make things worse? Perhaps we owe them some apology. Mountain lions seem scarier to me anyway. They hunt like cats after all; sneaking up silently and pouncing from behind. |
