If you're looking for something comparable to Code Geass and Gundam 00, you'll probably want to check out Tengen Toppa Gurren Laggan. Although I'm a bit hesitant to recommend this because I believe viewers are best served by watching Gunbuster 1 & 2 before seeing TTGL.

No offense to the posters above but avoid Toaru and School Rumble they are both a waste of time. Check out DMC for comedy, Cowboy Bebop for some Action, and Higurashi/Kaiji for something to keep you guessing.

No offense to the poster above but Toaru Majutsu no Index is not a waste of time. It's quite a charming series, with great animation and quirky characters.

Funny without gintama in your list? Sacrilege for heavy plot and insane atmosphere, try higurashi and umineko no naku koro ni. Reborn! is also great, provided you can survive the first 30 episodes.
