I hadn't even seen the other Macross series. To me, Frontier went absolutely no where because of all the references. I'm sorry, but I didn't enjoy it.

Alto was a crummy lead because it was hard to tell if he actually liked anyone. His dream of flying in an atmosphere while romantic wasn't really much of a goal. They oversold the fact that he was some great actor, that more than a pilot or a mercenary or anything at all, he could fool people into believing in him. Mikhail even said at one point that Alto was merely performing a role whenever he did anything. He was 'acting' when he was a pilot or when was a love interest for either of the girls.

I don't know about you, but it's hard to like a character that is a habitual bullshitter. He felt very shallow and didn't have chemistry with anyone as a result.

Sheryl felt the same exact way as Alto did. The only time I thought she seemed natural was in episode 4 I think it was? Where she had a tour of Frontier. That was the only episode I thought she was actually kind of cute. Otherwise she was merely a drama queen and a performer much like Alto. Even when she was literally dying I thought she was merely enjoying the tragic story that was her life.

Ranka was great. Her innocence worked well in contrast to the cruel and shallow Alto and Sheryl. She actually felt real compared to the other characters in the series.

Story-wise, just terrible. The references killed it. I mean, who really deserved to win at the end? Frontier? The SMS? The Cyber Club? To me the Varja should have just eaten everyone since they're the ones who are having their territory encroached upon by humanity. That would have been the best end.

And what references are you referring to if you haven't seen other Macross series?

Except the Vajra don't really have a territory to speak of. But, it would appear you have missed the case where humanity & the vajra were, in fact, coexisting in peace until the birth of Ranka Lee.

How about two episodes dedicated to the making of a movie about one of the previous series? Where one of the main characters takes on the role of playing the part of one of the main characters from the previous series (and the other main character acts a stunt double for a kissing scene between the two other main characters from that series)? Just to name a few.

People were very vocal about all the references and homages being made when the series first aired. It was quite distracting and left the impression that they were shoehorning in as many as they could. Which they probably were. It didn't leave any room for any of the characters outside of Alto and Ranka to come into their room.

So basically you were distracted by the more vocal fans about the references of the series rather than the references you discovered yourself?

Thats quite a pity, having yourself spoiled by the fans.

Though not quite a justification to call this series a show of references.

Yes, character analysis sometimes comes off as negative if you analyze properly what a character has accomplished in her/his time on the show.

Well, everybody is allowed to her/his own opinion, no matter how wrongheaded that opinion might be. I'll refrain from re-hashing for the nth time all the wrong things about Ranka, I've been down that road a lot of times before. ^^
