Dragon Ball Super [Anticipation]

Apparently, there will be a new Dragon Ball series to debut in Summer 2015. It will be an original story by Toriyama. The title is called Dragon Ball Super.

Quote:
The story of the anime will take place a few years after the defeat of Majin Buu, when the Earth has become peaceful once again. The voice of Goku, Gohan, and Goten, Masako Nozawa commented on the new anime, saying, “We've always used the word 'chō' (Super) with Dragon Ball in commercials, games and the like, but the fact that the series titled Dragon Ball Super is beginning is the best thing ever.”

The new Tv anime, Dragon Ball Super (ドラゴンボール超(スーパー)), takes place after the battle against Buu.

It will be based from a new story by Toriyama himself, the time period seems to take place after Goku's fight with Majin Buu

Thanks for the info. I'm guessing this will probably air in the same station after Kai is done. Hopefully, Digimon Tri won't be delayed. (again)

Yep, it's confirmed. It will be replacing Kai's time slot in July.

Let me jump over the hype bandwagon while it is still hot.

But seriously, can't believe this is happening. Feels almost surreal.
Hopefully this turns out good, and since the story is actually done by Toriyama this time, GT can be erased.

The last Digimon series was on TV Asahi, not FujiTV. I doubt the release of this new Dragon Ball series will affect Digimon as much as you think it will, it (referring to Digimon) could easily air on another station.

Or more likely, it's a web series in which case it's effectively doomed

That's indeed the worst case scenario, seeing how Soul of Gold and Sailormoon turned out, combined with the lack of news..

Why? WHY!? What more can Toriyama bring to the series 18 years after GT? He was fed up with it by the end of the Buu Saga and his newest movies have shown that the most innovative thing he's come up with in the past 20 or so years is to change the hair colour of Goku from black to red or yellow to blue.

I'm not saying my inner child isn't intrigued by the major inspiration of a whole 2 generations returning but progress has been made in storytelling in the anime/manga industry. We can't keep going back to DB again and again.

Dragon Ball manga had ended with Buu Saga and DB GT was anime only acr/filler season. Toriyama did not worked or even helped with this. If you want look for cannon material after DBZ Z that would Battle of the Gods and Fukkatsu no F.

Anyway....

Some franchises need to be put to bed, and DB is one of them.

^ What he said.

Don't get me wrong, I loved DB. DBZ (Kai) is also a fun ride. But it's getting a little... uninspired lately? How many Super Saiyan #'s are they going to go up to?

Canonically, 3. The new trend is adding adjective to Super Saiyan.

DBZ was my entire world in like, 2000-2002, but I eventually grew out of it. Still, the little kid in me that was in love with DBZ can't help being curious. The movies were whatever--I've never taken them serious regardless of the anime--but an actual series? That's huge, and I'm excited.

So yes, all you people saying "it should die", I'm going to be a part of the problem.

If you're tired of DBZ... don't watch it? It's not like anyone's holding a gun to your head and forcing you to watch.

That said, I'm approaching the series with cautious optimism. If Toriyama can recapture the storytelling he had up to the end of the Cell Games, then great. If it's as blech as the Buu Saga, then screw it.

Uh-uh. He's gotta do better than that. If DBZ Super is just "The Story of Goku" again, I'm out. You've gotta give other characters their chance to shine.

LOL, c'mon. It's been 20 years and that's gotta be one of the primary complaints even from the fans. How do you decide to come back but not acknowledge that.
