The episode was awfully inconsistant imo. While some of the scenes in the later half were really, really good, most of the episode felt rather cheap. The pacing in the first half was kinda bad, and when they actually did the "two people sitting on chairs and talking" part I really wanted to throw something at Gainax. It's kinda disappointing that the Giga Drill Breaker is recycled too, and Guame didn't even die. Oh well, at least Simon is a MAN now!

Saw the whole thing about an hour ago and brooded over it since. :|
Everything up to the union sequence = PERFECT Everything after the union sequence = PERFECT Now, the union sequence. It was supposed to be the climax of the whole episode, but I had some problems with it. 1. Minor, but the constant talking interrupted the song. 2. The song itself wasn't exactly good, didn't fit the mood or the pace of animation. Felt disjointed, if I do say so myself. 3. Slight animation inconsistency when Simon is zoom'd - he's sitting down when Lagann opens up, but is in his Garlock pose when the camera focuses on him. But worst of all, 4. SIMON'S ENGRISH. Yeah, people laugh and Engrish but I usually don't...I was impressed by Archer's chant in FSN and Lelouch's "Mission Number Three" in CG. Though accented, they were still crisp (though not always the case with Archer) and sounded pretty nice. Simon stuttered, sounded like a cigar smoker and pronounced "GIGA DRILL BREAKER" horribly. Given how the actor for Simon said "SPIN ON" in episode one (?), I'm guessing it was direction that lead to that result, but it didn't come out right at all. Ugh. Didn't mind the reused animation. So to finish on an optimistic note, the next three episodes should be godly. |

I didn't minded the pacing in the first half nevertheless... not even the classical Gainax "people talking in chairs" scene. Maybe understanding the dialogs change this, though. |
