It's also out in nicovid too, if you don't mind FLQ raws.

Haven't watched it due to fucked up audio at the moment, but sounds like a good episode.:3

The episode was awfully inconsistant imo. While some of the scenes in the later half were really, really good, most of the episode felt rather cheap. The pacing in the first half was kinda bad, and when they actually did the "two people sitting on chairs and talking" part I really wanted to throw something at Gainax. It's kinda disappointing that the Giga Drill Breaker is recycled too, and Guame didn't even die. Oh well, at least Simon is a MAN now!

Saw the whole thing about an hour ago and brooded over it since. :|

Everything up to the union sequence = PERFECT
Everything after the union sequence = PERFECT

Now, the union sequence. It was supposed to be the climax of the whole episode, but I had some problems with it.

1. Minor, but the constant talking interrupted the song.
2. The song itself wasn't exactly good, didn't fit the mood or the pace of animation. Felt disjointed, if I do say so myself.
3. Slight animation inconsistency when Simon is zoom'd - he's sitting down when Lagann opens up, but is in his Garlock pose when the camera focuses on him.

But worst of all,

4. SIMON'S ENGRISH. Yeah, people laugh and Engrish but I usually don't...I was impressed by Archer's chant in FSN and Lelouch's "Mission Number Three" in CG. Though accented, they were still crisp (though not always the case with Archer) and sounded pretty nice.

Simon stuttered, sounded like a cigar smoker and pronounced "GIGA DRILL BREAKER" horribly. Given how the actor for Simon said "SPIN ON" in episode one (?), I'm guessing it was direction that lead to that result, but it didn't come out right at all. Ugh.

Didn't mind the reused animation.

So to finish on an optimistic note, the next three episodes should be godly.

That's not an inconsistency, that's a lack of transition. You can't stand up in that cockpit when the hatch is closed, it would be unrealistic. He would have to stand after it opens.

Apologies, that's what I meant to say but lacked the words to qualify it properly.

Heh, the first half of the episode in NicoVideo looked much better than the actual HQ thing. It didn't looked bad, the AD did a good job keeping the characters on design anyway, it was just cheap... imagine Eureka Seven 49 and you have a decent approximation of the episode. Both had impressive scenes by a guy called Yoshinari but were still somewhat budget when being measured as a whole. I would really love to be able to give this episode 2 different ratings as a whole.

I didn't minded the pacing in the first half nevertheless... not even the classical Gainax "people talking in chairs" scene. Maybe understanding the dialogs change this, though.

Ultra-manliness, like moe but for tough guys and not cute girls. Basically any dude who makes you go batcrazy insane - Simon pretty much fit the bill in this episode.

The whole scene with Nia visiting the "royal graveyard" was something. So the Spiral King apparently keeps having human children, and just throws them away at a certain age then? .....
