There isn't much difference between the anime and manga, the anime does have new scenes and such to build more character development. The biggest difference was probably in OVA 26 when Tenma donned his God cloth again, which didn't happen in the manga.
So i would say to start at chapter 88, just to understand more |

The Gold Saints Gaiden are pretty nice, really gives us the chance of knowing them better! Seeing other mythologies included in the mix is also a nice touch.
In fact I dare to say that Lost Canvas as its own series tops Kurumada's original series.

Well, that's certainly your opinion. I agree with Tong that LC is overall a better-written story by using the already-established mithology & characters well. One example out of many, I like most of the Specters in LC than the ones in OS even though they're supposed to be the same characters. That's because LC fleshed them out better. And the drawing and fights certainly looks more complex than OS and fits my taste more.

I didn't like the fact the script trying the enemy to just happen to be related to each saint past. As if they were fated to each other. Poseidon, the girl; Alones being able to supresss a freaking god for so long when even Shun could barely control a hand for seconds and powerlevels... uhgh.
Before that arc it wasn't like that. |

They pretty much had no background on their stories and weren't very interesting characters. In LC we also get the chance to see the Gold Saints' full potential! It's even worse when we talk about the specters, specially the Hell judges who are a joke (except Radamanthys maybe). The judges in LC really made justice to their reputations, specially Aiacos who had awesome skills and techniques. Sure, Ikki was pretty strong but even then... And the Gold Saints' Gaiden is just the icing on the already delicious cake!
