"It's okay." He gave a lazy grin to the man. "You should know that my doors are almost always open, so, what's the problem?"

"A large army of Mazoku are heading here, for Seiryuun!"

"WHAT?!" Phil stood up, his eyes wide. "How large?"

The man shuddered as he pulled out a scroll and unrolled it, shaking violently. "By all our scouts reports, the army outnumbers ours by at a margin of at least five to one."

Gritting his teeth, Phil turned to his other advisers and swung his large arm to the side. "Quickly! Gather our forces, secure the walls and move civilians to the safe houses."

"Yes, sir!" The advisers stood up and went to deliver their orders.

Phil narrowed his eyes. If only his father had not passed away a few months ago, he would be feeling more positive about this.

"Father!" He looked up and smiled as his two daughters walked into the throne room. "Is it true, a horde of Mazoku are heading this way?"

He nodded, sighing softly. "If there was ever a time that Seiryuun could use a miracle, now would be that time."

"Do not worry, father, between the royal mages, Amelia and myself, we shall handle these Mazoku with ease! OHOHOHOHOHOHOHOHOHOHO!"

"Gracia, that's scary." Amelia said, trembling slightly as she sweat-dropped before looking at her father. "Daddy, I've sent messenger pigeons out to various places. I hope that I can find a few strong Allies of Justice to fight against these dark forces."

"So do I, Amelia, so do I." King Phil said as he looked into the sky as the clouds started to gather. 'How... Appropriate.' Standing up, he started to walk through the castle, his daughters following him. "The first thing we need to do is make sure that our fortifications are strong enough to hold against the hordes of Mazoku, also, we need to make sure that the civilians are in the safe houses."

"The Knights are already moving the civilians, daddy." Amelia spoke up as they turned another corner. "If things go smoothly enough, we'll have all the civilians in safe houses shortly before the Mazoku arrive."

"And the magicians are fortifying the lines."

King Phil nodded, that was good. "I hope that will hold them."

"If you're talking about that horde of Mazoku heading this way, I doubt it." Phil looked up at an open window at the figure sitting there. "You'll need someone who's skilled in Shamanistic magic to pull this off."

When he jumped out of the window and landed near them, Amelia's eyes sparkled in happiness. "Mr. Zelgadis!"

"I'm glad you're here." King Phil nodded to him. "The power of Justice and Pacifism drew you to us in our time of need, huh?"

"Uh, no, I was just heading in this general direction when the Mazoku started gathering." Zelgadis smirked slightly and snapped his fingers. "Also, I picked up some help along the way."

Looking at where he was pointing, Amelia's eyes widened. "Mr. Gourry! Miss Sylphiel!" She then saw the third person behind them and smiled more. "Mr. Zest!" Even with his beard and tattered clothes, she could tell it was that knight that helped her out two years ago on that one mission. Running up to Sylphiel, she gave the woman a hug. "How is your son?"

Sylphiel smiled at her. "We were bringing him here to meet you, actually. He's in a safe house right now."

Gourry looked at Naga, Amelia, then at Zelgadis, then back to his wife, before finally looking at Zest. "Even with all of us and your entire army, we would need a miracle to pull this off." Even with his skill, Mazoku had always been bad news.

"We'll have to make due." Naga said as she walked up to him. "We always have."

"Yeah, but making due and having an extreme amount of firepower is usually what you need in a situation like this." A familiar voice had the group spinning around to see a group of people standing in the doorway with a familiar face in the front, grinning as she wore long blue pants and a short-sleeved shirt.

"Lina?" Zelgadis stared in shock, before rubbing his eyes. "You're really here..."

Lina just grinned at him. "We can play catch up later, we've got an army to stop."

The grin on her face was infectious.

The overwhelming odds suddenly seemed far less overwhelming at that moment.

I really did try to write a short story this time. I failed. Damn you deathcurse, damn you for the plotbunnies.

Here's a teaser to my contribution for the Vivio x Hayate trend. This is something of an unofficial continuation to deathcurse's HayateVivio stories though I propell things a couple of years into the future. Reading You Never Lose By Loving, Lose By Holding Back and her ongoing Prerogative of the Brave by the original author might be a good idea.

Prelude

No matter how tall the mountain,
it cannot block out the sun.

First-lieutenant Vivio Takamachi-Harlaown was not enjoying herself.

This was perhaps not so surprising considering her situation. She was stuck between two piles of what once must have been brick walls while torrents of magic-infused bullets whined by her ears. Impressive blasts of echo-shells fell all around her, tossing sprays of shattered rock into the grey air and consequently into Vivio’s hair and barrier jacket. The pulverized stone made her itch in places she didn’t know she possessed but made the scorching lightning blasts more bearable. On the top of this, unadministrated world #62 was a humid planet covered by a lush, thriving jungle blessed with the fattest mosquitoes Vivio had ever seen. In other words, it was generally a great place to be if one wanted to feel like a butt. The one upside was really that none of the shooting was aimed at her, at least not yet.

Whatever command wanted them to accomplish here had better be decided quick. Vivio was trained for hard battles, not for sitting ducks while others killed each other. Watching the rebel fractions and the government forces hammer each other to pieces were truly starting to make her sick with frustration. Vivio was her mother’s daughter, and even if the Harlaown in her understood the tactical sense of awaiting precise orders the Takamachi in her had since long grown tired of the slaughter.

Unfortunately, the negotiations with the local authorities were going slow. Vivio understood the need to legalize TSAB interventions but she rarely agreed with the price. Behind every dead soldier was a family in grief. There would be a dead son or daughter, an orphaned child or a heartbroken mother and for them this war would never end. Most of all, there was the hatred that came with such sorrow. It irked her terribly that something as fickle as politics were stopping her team to act, but Hayate herself had taught Vivio combat tactics and so the young Takamachi held position and waited.

A steady, gloved hand on her shoulder shook her out of her miserable grouse.

“Easy kid, you look like the lady just spooked ya.” Officer Rhen said while crawling on all four beside her. His olive-tuned skin was covered in a fine patina of dust and mud, his otherwise blue barrier jacket looking none the better.

“Not me,” Vivio grumbled, wiping the dirt off her sweaty cheeks. “She’s getting a good harvest though, curse her fortune.”

Rhen barked out humourless laughter as he laid down face-up beside her, trying his best to not raise any limbs over the protective mounds. Among the Defence Corps Special Task Group, or the Hounds as they were called, ‘The Lady’ was how one referred to death with a capital D. Vivio could see how old dogs like Rhen would treat the metaphor with a near religious reverence. She was nineteen and two years in active interplanetary service had dragged her through her fair share of loss. Death in its simplicity and final silence was a constant presence in their work, and it only took so many deaths to make a soldier grateful for his life.

“Don’t curse her Takamachi, we don’t want her attention more than those poor suckers do. Just remember what to tell her when she comes for you.”

A fire shell exploded above their heads like thunder. The heatwave scathed against their necks, forcing them to bury themselves even deeper into the damp mud.

Vivio spat out the words with mud and saliva, grinning while she spoke: “Not today.”

“Indeed,” Rhen smiled with her while he clung to his device. “Knew you weren’t a baby-ace for nothing.”

Both their communicators came to life in a storm of static. Vivio felt her heart quicken at the familiar sound of her commanding officer’s voice coming through, announcing that their planetary presence was now considered legal. Finally! She listened carefully, meticulously, like she had been taught and forged since she was old enough to carry a device. She memorized the words, structuring them into her own orders as she assessed their position.

In short bursts of telepathy, she divided the tasks between her officers, a good squad of six, each with their own unique devices and specialities. Sacred Heart flared to life on her wrist.

“Panserschild!” Vivio shouted over the gunfire, boosting up her protective spell and covering as many of her men as she could while they plunged into action. The stark impact of a shell dented against her spell as her mind blanked into white, adrenaline kicked in instantly as Vita’s training took over. Her tracking spell sensed over a dozen of projectiles as her legs propelled her forwards between the trees. Half of them seemed to hit her shield.

Rhen, being second in command pulled her attention with a telepathic noise, saluting her with a small wave. Vivio nodded them off and the team split into two groups of three. She watched them disappear into the thick vegetation, wishing them success and safety with all her heart. Vivio gathered the remaining two of her team and set off, determined to accomplish their objective.

There would perhaps be a day when The Lady caught up with her. One day, she may be the one to stand amidst the droves of her fallen men and it would be her time to join those beyond the shade. That may be but not today.

Vivio thought of Hayate.

Not today.

I meant to write Vivio as an adult doing adult things with Hayate. Right now however, this is looking more like Saving Private Ryan. -_- Sigh.

Yeah, deathcurse made Vivio SWAT, so I upped her career a bit to something like Navy SEAL. xD

You have Vivio so Badass here . Very nice opening, it really introduces the setting without being boring and even adds to Vivio's characterization. I thought I had gone out of the way in making Vivio SWAT, but you definitely take the cake by making her a Navy SEAL-equivalent .

Vivio really feels like she's...happy, in a way. Like, she knows what she wants in life and is doing it, and so she feels fulfilled despite her troubles. I'm not sure where I got that from, but I really felt that way when I finished reading the story.

I'm interested to see where this all goes .

I'm glad you liked it. And well, I suppose she's happy where she is though the story isn't going to be all flowers and bunnies. I'm leaving those for you ^^;.

She does well as a badass doesn't she? =D That came strangely natural as I was writing. I'm almost tempted to write a fullblown warfare fic for this Vivio, with Hayate set as the field marshal for the campaign.

...I guess no one really cares about my fanfic induced ulcer...

Edit: Well, that's stupid. Google has some link with ff.net, so there is a "Share +1" button at the top right of each fic chapter. But that makes the first line off kilter with the other lines if you center the first couple of lines (for fic name and chapter title). If someone figures out how to get rid of it, I'd like to know. Rhen barked out humourless laughter as he laid down face-up beside her, trying his best to not raise any limbs over the protective mounds. Among the Defence Corps Special Task Group, or the Hounds as they were called, ‘The Lady’ was how one referred to death with a capital D. Vivio could see how old dogs like Rhen would treat the metaphor with a near religious reverence. She was nineteen and two years in active interplanetary service had dragged her through her fair share of loss. Death in its simplicity and final silence was a constant presence in their work, and it only took so many deaths to make a soldier grateful for his life.

“Don’t curse her Takamachi, we don’t want her attention more than those poor suckers do. Just remember what to tell her when she comes for you.”

A fire shell exploded above their heads like thunder. The heatwave scathed against their necks, forcing them to bury themselves even deeper into the damp mud.

Vivio spat out the words with mud and saliva, grinning while she spoke: “Not today.”

“Indeed,” Rhen smiled with her while he clung to his device. “Knew you weren’t a baby-ace for nothing.”

Both their communicators came to life in a storm of static. Vivio felt her heart quicken at the familiar sound of her commanding officer’s voice coming through, announcing that their planetary presence was now considered legal. Finally! She listened carefully, meticulously, like she had been taught and forged since she was old enough to carry a device. She memorized the words, structuring them into her own orders as she assessed their position.

In short bursts of telepathy, she divided the tasks between her officers, a good squad of six, each with their own unique devices and specialities. Sacred Heart flared to life on her wrist.

“Panserschild!” Vivio shouted over the gunfire, boosting up her protective spell and covering as many of her men as she could while they plunged into action. The stark impact of a shell dented against her spell as her mind blanked into white, adrenaline kicked in instantly as Vita’s training took over. Her tracking spell sensed over a dozen of projectiles as her legs propelled her forwards between the trees. Half of them seemed to hit her shield.

Rhen, being second in command pulled her attention with a telepathic noise, saluting her with a small wave. Vivio nodded them off and the team split into two groups of three. She watched them disappear into the thick vegetation, wishing them success and safety with all her heart. Vivio gathered the remaining two of her team and set off, determined to accomplish their objective.

There would perhaps be a day when The Lady caught up with her. One day, she may be the one to stand amidst the droves of her fallen men and it would be her time to join those beyond the shade. That may be but not today.

Vivio thought of Hayate.

Not today.

I meant to write Vivio as an adult doing adult things with Hayate. Right now however, this is looking more like Saving Private Ryan. -_- Sigh.

Yeah, deathcurse made Vivio SWAT, so I upped her career a bit to something like Navy SEAL. xD

Here's a teaser to my contribution for the Vivio x Hayate trend. This is something of an unofficial continuation to deathcurse's HayateVivio stories though I propell things a couple of years into the future. Reading You Never Lose By Loving, Lose By Holding Back and her ongoing Prerogative of the Brave by the original author might be a good idea.

Prelude

First-lieutenant Vivio Takamachi-Harlaown was not enjoying herself.

This was perhaps not so surprising considering her situation. She was stuck between two piles of what once must have been brick walls while torrents of magic-infused bullets whined by her ears. Impressive blasts of echo-shells fell all around her, tossing sprays of shattered rock into the grey air and consequently into Vivio’s hair and barrier jacket. The pulverized stone made her itch in places she didn’t know she possessed but made the scorching lightning blasts more bearable. On the top of this, unadministrated world #62 was a humid planet covered by a lush, thriving jungle blessed with the fattest mosquitoes Vivio had ever seen. In other words, it was generally a great place to be if one wanted to feel like a butt. The one upside was really that none of the shooting was aimed at her, at least not yet.

Whatever command wanted them to accomplish here had better be decided quick. Vivio was trained for hard battles, not for sitting ducks while others killed each other. Watching the rebel fractions and the government forces hammer each other to pieces were truly starting to make her sick with frustration. Vivio was her mother’s daughter, and even if the Harlaown in her understood the tactical sense of awaiting precise orders the Takamachi in her had since long grown tired of the slaughter.

Unfortunately, the negotiations with the local authorities were going slow. Vivio understood the need to legalize TSAB interventions but she rarely agreed with the price. Behind every dead soldier was a family in grief. There would be a dead son or daughter, an orphaned child or a heartbroken mother and for them this war would never end. Most of all, there was the hatred that came with such sorrow. It irked her terribly that something as fickle as politics were stopping her team to act, but Hayate herself had taught Vivio combat tactics and so the young Takamachi held position and waited.

A steady, gloved hand on her shoulder shook her out of her miserable grouse.

“Easy kid, you look like the lady just spooked ya.” Officer Rhen said while crawling on all four beside her. His olive-tuned skin was covered in a fine patina of dust and mud, his otherwise blue barrier jacket looking none the better.

“Well, it’s not like it’s named after you specifically,” Shamal said, trying to head off the diminutive knight’s tirade before it began. “You just happen to have the same name...” She trailed off noticing that Vita was less angry than she was... confused.

“So... what is this thing again?”

“The Playstation Vita,” Signum said from the couch. “A handheld entertainment device on Earth to come out at the end of the year. They just announced it at a huge gaming conference there.”

“How do you know anything about such a thing, Signum?” Vita asked.

“Hayate has been paying close attention to the event.”

“Entertainment device... video game?” Vita asked.

Signum nodded. “That was one of the terms Hayate used.”

Now Vita’s face split slowly into a grin. “This. Is. Awesome.”

“You like these entertainment devices?” Zafira asked from the corner.

“Yeah! I tried it a few times while we were there and it was pretty cool. For a second I thought that I was in a story called PS Vita, and it was by Satashi or something.”

Shamal sweatdropped. That would have indeed been much worse. This, however...

“This is an honor!” Vita said, beaming. “I have to go tell Nanoha!” And off she bounded out of the room.

There was a beat of silence. Then Hayate stuck her head in the room.

“Signum, I don’t think I need to tell you this, but no mentioning that a picture of our Vita is on the Kotaku website.”

“Not a word.”
