Just a very dialed in cheap parody of CCS/Nanoha-ish elements outsourced to a 3rd string manga artist.

It starts shedding that by 2wei though (see the manga thread), but alas, it's not to be animated yet, which is a shame.

Truth be told, the mangaka was not very experienced before starting Illya, but his drawing and storytelling developed magnificently over its course, and I hear that 3rei gets even better. Also he is not copying CCS and Nanoha, he has a very satirical (and occasionally critical) take on what is popular about the mahou shoujo franchises sold to guys. And let's not forget that he started Illya as a parody/spin-off influenced by Carnival Phantasm doujinshi, as well as his own (under the circle KALMIA)... his Illya doujinshi series predate even Nanoha, and you can see where the ideas for Illya (particularly the first run) are coming from.

1st manga < 2wei < 3rei

We just have to deal with the 1st manga season for now then wait for 2wei to get animated I guess. Even I agree that 1st season of the manga was kind of bad compared to 2wei and 3rei (And so much NSFW in those series)

I don't think it would be fair to say that he copied CCS, but it's very clear he was inspired by it. Ilya's magical girl character design, and "Class Cards" are proof enough of that.

In any event, this isn't anything to be ashamed of. Personally, I really like how this show fuses the heroic class-based spirits of the Fate/Series with the Clow Cards aspect of CCS. The fusion work surprisingly well, and it ensures some very nice action scenes.

However, this show is very different from CCS in most other regards, so yeah, it's not copying it.

I think they might have overdid Miyu Sue a bit, but I suppose that makes sense if the goal is to poke fun at this archetype. On the positive side, I liked how some of the kids (and not just Illya) expressed a touch of jealousy here. That's more realistic than the 100% fawning you often see for this archetype.

I really liked Luvia in this episode. The feud between her and Rin is very funny and enjoyable to watch.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that I loved this episode, but I'm a bit surprised at the generally negative response this episode has received on this thread. As an anime-only viewer, this seemed like a sensible build-off from Episode 2. The pacing is pretty standard fare for this type of show, and the preview for Episode 4 certainly looks promising. I'm not sure what people were hoping for with this episode?

It's a magical girl show that follows a lot of magical girl conventions, just like Valvrave is a mecha show that follows a lot of mecha conventions (seriously, the 1st episode of Valvrave is totally in line with how most Gundam shows start), but I don't recall Valvrave getting blasted much for this. It's just to be expected, really.

Delighted to see Rin kick Luvia during that laugh. I. HATE. That. Laugh.

You all complaining about this being CCS-like and such just wait patiently. Even the first manga had it's twists and moments of darkness, mild as they may be compared to the next two series.

^ That too. The show is progressing kind of the way it should be. There's going to be more that will happen and more of it will be exciting, but we're just starting, for crying out loud. The show is behaving the way you should expect this sort of show to behave in the beginning.

I don't know why you quoted me. I was only complaining about the anime. I've loved the manga ever since the first series, although the particular scene that made me fall in love with it hasn't happened in the anime yet.

Yeah, they were clearly making fun of the typical all-around perfect rival character you often find in magical girl shows. They even mentioned how cliché it was for her to transfer to Illya's school. Miyu is actually not that much of a Mary Sue. She's a very fun and endearing character. You'll see that as soon as next week (or in a few hours if you watch the nico version).

For context in my reply. I only disagreed with the first post, and partially agreed with the next two replies (including yours). I also like the manga more, but the anime visually isn't that bad, considering its competition this season.

The reason why Miyu is cooking so good is because she took lessons from FSN Shirou.

Man Ilya sure took some hits in terms of this girl outclassing her in so many respects . Certainly Miyu is pretty intense and has a lot of talents, though doesn't seem able to reign herself in. Turn a simple hamburger steak into a 4 course meal .

Looking forward to finding out what's driving that girl. As of now doesn't seem much benefit to collecting the class cards for Rin and Luvia other than for the chance to use magic and go nuts. If it's not a game for her there has to be a serious reason she's so fired up. In terms of that house could just rationalize it to Luvia being behind it. Someone with a ridiculous laugh like that probably would have a mansion built just so she can stay there until the card collection is complete.

Certainly having fun with the series so far. Playing up some of the cliches but the characters are still likable. Though have to say Ilya might have gotten the bad luck running into Ruby instead of someone like Sapphire. Way more trouble there .

It's kind of funny because I think Ruby and Sapphire are the most interesting parts of the show. Not that I'm not enjoying everyone else, but for magical wands they have quite a bit of personality.

That's because they are based on the two most complicated characters from Tsukihime. Though I have no idea why they didn't use the original names (jade and amber), why change to sapphire and ruby, have I missed something

Sapphire and Ruby ARE the original names. When Rin transformed with the kaleidostick in Hollow Ataraxia she became the magical girl Kaleido Ruby. The sticks have never had any other names.

Eh I always thought them as "objectifications" of the twin maids

They are the objectifications, even proven in fate tiger col, where Ruby TRANSFORMS into Magical Amber/Kohaku.

I have no clue what you're talking about, but the wands have always been called Ruby and Sapphire, at least as long as they've had names other than just "kaleidostick." Insisting on them holding names of characters from other works is just silly.

Did u even read my post? Go to Fate tiger colosseum, it reveals that Ruby's true form is Magical Amber. U'd think they also have Kohaku and Hisui's voices for Ruby and Sapphire is more than just a coincidence, if you are thinking plotwise. Just think of Zelretch messing something up again.

Perhaps you should read the part of my post that goes "I have no clue what you're talking about" and realize that it means I have no clue what the hell you're talking about. As in "the terms you are using are complete gibberish to me."
