Anime series of this year
Well i've stopped watching anime since december of 2008 and now that i have some time free i would like to catch up a bit.
So basically i would like suggetions of new anime series that came out between 2008/2009... genre can be almost anything but sports. Fantasy, Sci Fi, Martial Arts, school life, etc... and if there is some romance or comedy in it it would be great. Just the name of the series will do, i'll search for the summary. =D Here is a list of the series i've watched with my ratings for reference. http://myanimelist.net/animelist/cubito Thanks EDIT: I would prefer completed / finished series ... already got too many on going animes in my "to watch list" xD

Heh... since hands down the best anime so far of the year is Cross Game I'm not sure what to say.
Yes it is classified as a "sports anime". But that's really not the main focus of the anime. Rather baseball is a thread connecting a coming of age story. I'd call it 50% slice of life, 30% baseball, and 20% romance. (Not every episode follows this division but that about covers it). Calling it a baseball anime is sort of like calling Ah My Goddess a motorcycle racing anime. Others that might be worth watching... I think Chrome Shelled Regios came out after 2008... K-On was a big slice of life hit. Haruhi Suzumiya is having season 1.5 (of course nothing is ever simple with Haruhi) Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is running and is following the manga storyline (already reached new material that is different from the first anime adaption. I just have to say that Roy Mustang vs Lust is awesome!) Also, while not new I noticed that an old classic is missing from your list. You own it to yourself to check out Maison Ikkoku (best romantic comedy ever) |

Yeah I'm kind of unsure if I should recommend it too, but..... Cross Game is also in my opinion the best anime of 2009 so far, and I was initially driven off by the "sports" idea too. It has good characters, a charming romantic element, has the school life element, and is very emotionally effective...Well, give it a chance, is all I will say.
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 has had a good beginning as well.

I still lean to Kemono no Souja Erin, though since it's putatively a childrens' show, it's likely to remain a minority taste.

this is THE defining new anime of the summer season imo, and it fits those descriptors perfectly |

Eden of the East was Spring 2009's big hit of the season.
Toradora was extremely popular for summer and Fall of '08. Bakemonogatari is running away with Summer of '09 Cross Game has done very well for Spring and Summer '09 Kannagi was a hit in Winter '08 There's a number of other great shows that weren't on everyone's radar like Skip Beat (loved this one), Sengoku Basara (GAR baby!), Ride Back (Ballet + mecha...it actually worked), Michiko to Hatchin (anime in South America??), and a whole bunch more. |
