The pre-air series information never sold me on the series, but I decided to give it a try anyway since CR has it. The first episode sold me in a way the promo material never did. I guess I'll be following both Nobunaga incarnations this season.

Is it weird that watching this thing, my main thought was that the best character by far was Oda Nabunaga? That guy was just completely hamming it up, and every line of dialogue out of his mouth was equal parts hilarious intensity and scenery chewing. Compared to the boring rendition of the real Nobunaga story in "that other Nobunaga show" they made this version a million times more entertaining. (also, anyone else notice they included the death scene in BOTH shows, both of which premiered within a day of each other? That was super weird)

Since this is a Nobunaga anime I'm going to this also here.
In older anime Oda Nobunaga got a more villainous role despite almost uniting Japan and being a more down to Earth guy. Good points: Nobunaga doesn't care about protocol or nobility. As long you are competent you are promoted. Nobunaga socializes with commoners. Nobunaga does not have beef with Christians or foreigners. He probably won't isolate Japan like the Tokugawa Shogunate did. Bad points: Nobunaga lacks social graces. Nicknaming one of your generals a monkey. Calling yourself the demon lord of the six hells is not PR inducing. Paranoid about betrayals as he had several these. He tends to go over moral event horizons like: -Killing a hostage Mitsuhide promised to be kept safe.Which got his mother killed as retaliation. -Drinking from the skulls of his enemies. -Turning his enemies to gun powder ingredients. -Burning women and children even if they were members Japan's version of religious extremists. |

Sounds like he was a fun guy.
Of the two Nobunaga anime this is the one that interests me most. There's obviously going to be some over the top craziness going on but they didn't try to squeeze too much into one episode. But I will agree that the presentation could use a little work. I like that Shio is an outcast but seems perfectly fine with it. Obviously there's some degree of not being comfortable in a group involved but it seems to be something she's chosen. I can relate to that. And I liked the interaction she had with Asao. Also liking what was shown of Jack the Ripper. I'll be keeping an eye on this one. |

China closed itself to the world and still was forced under Europe's thumb. Admiral Perry coming was a wake up call that unless Japan changes they are vulnerable. Which was why the Samurai class had to be put obsolete and the rise of bankers and politicians. If Nobunaga did unite Japan he would've embraced innovations that would've made it a power earlier. As seen with him embracing firearms tactics the same time as Europe. |
