Nothing says 'steampunk' quite as much as a collection of random gears scattered around for no reason.

Dammit, I knew the mechanic guy's name rang a bell, but he's the head of the Baltimore Gun Club in Verne's "From the Earth to the Moon".

So. Last season we had a steampunky alt-Victorian England show featuring Cavorite, and this season we get the steampunky alt-Victorian England show with a Jules Verne reference, who sent his men to the moon using gunpowder. LITERARY FIGHT!
This amuses me.

Most official Western reviews of the source game say positive things about the characters and story, so I hope the anime can do the game justice.

Only one episode, and this is already doing better than a lot of otome anime adaptations in existence. Lupin was honestly apologetic when he realized he came off as strong, and the other guys called him out on it, so at least we don't have a terrible male cast on hand. The non-reaction to Impey's shojo sparkles was also a nice, humorous touch.

I was a little irked by how Cardia seemed to suffer from otome-anime-protagonist syndrome (meek, one word statements; passively stands by while scenes are dominated by male leads) for the first half, but things got better by the second half of the episode. Cardia's supposed to be a great protagonist, so I'm tentatively expecting things to get better as the anime continues.

Her VA, Saori Hayami, also voiced Kusanagi from Kamigami no Asobi, who was also a decent protagonist, so here's to looking forward to a solid adaptation!

Spoiler for a little rant in difference:

Overall, VN made more sense if I had to shorten it all.

Steampunk setting makes this Otome adaptation interesting. And the girl has poison? Hmm, I'll follow this one to see how things turn out. Just hoping Cardia doesn't fall into the meek, mindless Otome heroine like most of her predecessors.

Hmmm, casting Hayami as Cardia is kind of the low point for me. I kind of had an idea of what they were going for when they did it, and the thought didn't make me all that happy. Anyway, we'll see where this goes.

That is NOT Impey Barbicane, he was serious, lawful and dignified. Not Frankenstein. Not distinctly Arsene Lupin. He says London is the centre of the world, do the writers even remember he's French?

These long-remembered characters had defined and original CHARACTERS in the novels; attaching their names to a trio of cliched bishonen is almost intolerable. Nor does steampunk make a setting alive or notable without something like historical British army uniforms to give a point of reference; otherwise it's just a mess of meaningless gadgets.

It was impressive to see Lupin frustrated and tense in his first appearance; this isn't typical behaviour for Gentleman Thieves. However it was ruined a minute later when the original G.T. had to go through the cliched posturing that his successors have worn out over the decades since. The heroine may have character in the videogame, but I'm sure this series will focus on the active male characters and hang her out to dry. If the first episode was a book, I'd be dropping it down a well.

I'm a mythology junkie, so after numerous instances Hollywood and anime - even books - butchering, I've long since learned to treat these characters as completely different people who happen to share the same name and occasional traits and relationships. It makes watching more enjoyable and helps dull the pain.

Yeah, casting could be better, but I had worst-case scenario in mind when thinking about the cast -- grating, sickly-sweet voice or Sawashiro attempting to sound young again -- so I'm quite okay with Hayami.

Again, same complaints. Also, repeating the question every time. Is this MGS? What did I expect from Strike the Blood director?

I get what you mean, I could do that if the new anime characters were interesting or original.

After three episodes, I'm disappointed. I thought this might be the series that finally does otome adaptations right, given the high praise Code:Realize received, but it's falling into the same pitfalls of too much emphasis on selling the males (which it's doing quite poorly) and neglecting the heroine. Once again, the writers don't seem to be trying, and cheap marketing trumps telling a good story. Guess I should have followed my instincts about how the adaptation would turn out after seeing Harada was handling series composition. I'm debating whether or not to continue this, lest it ruin the game.

For the time being, it looks like Kahoko still remains the only well-adapted otome protagonist.

Yeah, but it's an anime adaptation of an otome game. That alone should already lower expectations to well below average.

Kahoko was alos lucky because they had 24 episodes to do it. I'm still enjoying this anime since it complements the game but yes, I do see and agree with the problems with it so far. Cardia is one of the few MC that stands out far above other MCs in the otome game genre and arguably even above heroines in other genres yet they are very slow in expressing her personality so far with this adaptation. At the very least, it's now starting to show in this episode but we're already 1/4 through the anime... I'm worried...

They're not wrong in using Herlock Sholmes, at least in relation to Lupin.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ars%C3...herlock_Holmes

Back then, Lupin's author, Maurice Leblanc, wrote a Lupin story,"Sherlock Holmes Arrives Too Late" using Holmes as Lupin's rival. When Arthur Conan Doyle made legal objections, Leblanc renamed Holmes to "Herlock Sholmes". He would go on to write some more crossover stories using the Sholmes character.

(In some versions, even Holmlock Shears was used as a name.)

Also, up until a few years ago Conan Doyle's estate claimed copyright over the Holmes name. Meaning anyone wanting to use Sherlock Holmes in their works would have to pay royalties to the estate (something which I could see the game developers wanting to avoid paying).
Of course it could also mean Code's writers may have been looking more at the Sholmes/Lupin connection by Leblanc, rather than Holmes by Conan Doyle.
