OMG what did I just watch? I am not sure if I should laugh or be terrified.

First time I ever saw suicide by a robotic bread.

Character & art design is quite lovely though.

That's because nano.ripe is awesome and I can't wait for the single to come out.

Relaxing? If you pay attention to the dialogue, the entire episode is full of black humor even before bread suicide.

You have the the fairies saying "Death by starvation! " with big grins on their faces. You have the pink haired protagonist saying "Don't hold meetings. The outcome will be decided before it even begins." There's also the FairyCo factory assistant confessing that he does not know much about the factory itself despite working there.

The entire episode is disguising dark humor and social commentary with bright and happy colors.

... my point is that it doesn't. Someone said the anime had a relaxing atmosphere, and I was giving examples of how it wasn't relaxing at all.

Hmm ... ep 1 was definitely a strange blend of different elements for me. I must admit I am curious to see where this will go, though. Will keep watching for now.

My mind is blank, I am baffled. It's the first time this has happened to me when watching a first episode. I have absolutely no idea what to think about this series but that's precisely the drive for me to continue until I find out just what in the world I just watched. Admittedly, those fairies are really adorable. But then the thing about the declining life quality is actually quite serious. And then the bread that suicided... the frozen bgm, animation and lines spoken make it into a comedy moment and I honestly did laugh but it was just so awkward. The whole situation is messed up to begin with.

Whacky OP and cryptic ED. Again, mind is blank.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, is that Masumi Itou singing the ending? I haven't heard her since Haibane Renmei!

yeah, she's a very prolific composer that not only composes OPs and EDs but plenty of OSTs as well but hearing her sing only happens once in a while and wish we heard her more, love her voice

Didn't know she was doing the ED here,I had already enjoyed the show but hearing her sing the ED was a really pleasant surprise, not to mention I love the visuals of the ED as well

Actually you can take out these Image Songs because they don't appear in the anime itself.
So:
1999 Ieji (Uchuu Kaizoku Mito no Daibouken ED)
1999 Maarui Sora (Uchuu Kaizoku Mito no Daibouken: Futari no Joou-sama ED)
2001 Kyou no Hana (Magical Nyan Nyan Taruto OP)

2002 Mahou no Kotoba (Gyouten Ningen Batsealer ED)

2003 Yasashii Ai no Hane (Tenshi no Shippo Chu! OP)
2003 Nemu Nemu Tenshi (Tenshi no Shippo Chu! ED)
2004 Futari Dakara (Koi Kaze ED)
2005 Shounen Humming (Zettai Shounen ED)
2009 Toumei na Inori (Umi Monogatari ED)
2009 Hoshi-tachi no Gogo (Umi Monogatari Insert Song)
2009 Hoshi no Kodomo-tachi (Hoshi ni Negai wo ED)
2010 Aozora no Mukou (Bungaku Shoujo: Memoire ED)
2012 Yume no Naka no Watashi no Yume (Jinrui wa Suitai shimashita ED)

Also don't forget about Heart of Air (her alias) - Haibane Renmei/Z.O.E endings and Oranges & Lemons (Japanese band formed by a duo of music composers and performers, Itou Masumi and Ueno Youko) - Azumanga OP/ED.

Christ, almighty, what an interesting show.

It's only a shame that the OP is ruined by nano.RIPE.

I re-watched ep 1 last evening, and when listening to the ED I was racking my brains trying to remember where I had heard the very distinctive voice before and finally remembered Haibane Renmei. To my mind it works very well in ... umm ... helping to generate the slightly "non-human" element to the series that the presence of the fairies seem to lend (at least to my way of thinking). So in that sense it is very "effective" for me.

There is a something about this series that I enjoy, and that is the "un-spelled out" background info about the state of mankind. An element like this was used in both Sora no Woto and Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, as examples of what I am trying to describe (at least examples that come to mind most immediately).

This one really looks like it will be interesting, though....
