Nope, instead, it felt like an adaptation of a comic book.
Maybe because, oh I dunno, it is.

And a good adaptation.
Rurouni Kenshin was never even supposed to be a Kurosawa film, nor should it be.

And this is coming from an old-timer who owns Kurosawa films on Laser discs, and love it.
Spoiler:
I don't see why they can't make the characters more grounded in reality when a lot of them where based in real people to begin with, being a comic book adaptation doesn't justify mediocre acting and poor direction.

You can tell Takeru Satoh trained really hard in the sword fighting for this movie. I was as impressed as many of you probably were but there's very little Battojutsu in the movie and it seems more close to Wuxia films, they called him Hitokiri Battousai for a reason.

I know kenshin was based vaguely on the four hitokoiri that were there during the bakumatsu (so, wakatsuki could make any mould he wanted for him), and I know Saito was a real dude. but Watsuki said specifically(?) that he changed the characters in his image to be good for a shonen/shojo manga. From that point of view, it would be betraying the original source material to make it realistic; its not supposed to be, there are plenty of excellent realistic samurai movies out there. Also the battou jutsu is kenshins strongest move, even in the manga he uses it sparingly. Besides, the battou jutsu is really something of a stand-off move, and its silly if they kept using it. I'm not sure about something; are you a fan of the manga/anime or not? Because the movie is directed towards those people.

It's no less realistic than the OVAs (the decent Trust & Betrayal ones, not the recent crap ones) which were a complete departure from Watsuki's vision and which he pointedly disowned. The series is its own entity now - there hasn't been anything consistent with Watsuki's continuity and spirit since the Kyoto Arc episodes ended.

I happen to love Trust and Betrayal to death. To me there could have been no other more perfectly fitting back story for Himura than that.

My point being, they have nothing to do with the manga, not that they're bad. They're not to my taste for the most part, but that's a matter of taste.

TWO sequels announced, making this a trilogy.
Kyoto arc and End of legend arc.

It's exactly as I imagined it'd be, doing Kyoto in the 2nd film, and likely doing the Jinchuu arc in the last movie, bringing the story to the closure.
As for Shishio... well, considering the dude is a wrapped mummy for the most part, I figure the voice acting is the most important part.

Since they didn't use Aoshi in the first movie, I wonder if the entire Ninja subplot is going to be omitted.
I like them a lot, but in the overall scheme of picture, they really don't play any important role tbh.

I don’t know. If they skip the ninja plot, Kyoto arc can be covered with one long movie imo.

People were skeptical about Heath Ledger for acting as The Joker in The Dark Knight for being a pretty boy but when the movie came out he was pretty much said to be the highlight of the film.

Young Shishio was a bishonen while the older one is covered in bandages so I guess the face is the least important thing about the actor.

If Fujiwara Tatsuya is able to pull his performance for Shishio as well as Heath Ledger was able to personify the twisted Joker to the character's full extent, it will be well worth the money.

Speaking of the actor himself, I watched both Battle Royale films a few months ago. I think he deserves to be approached more often by American productions that come filming in Japan or involving several other Japanese actors.

I agree. If he will indeed be cast as Shishio, I hope they'd have scenes without the bandages.
I loved him as Okita Souji in the Shinsengumi taiga dorama from 2004 and he was brilliant. Well, actually, a lot of actors in there were awesome

I imagined a large outflow of vaginal secretions with the announcement of who's playing Shishio.

Right now I just want to know who will be playing Hiko Seijuro and Seta Soujiro.
