Yes, I'm aware. I wasn't saying that the word Zwei is Japanese, I was saying "Zwei is (a) Japanese (person.)

Heck, even the Japanese pronunciation is close to "Elen" - "Eren" sounds different.

In effect, it's seriously hampering the enjoyment of fans who know the source. And this is the exact opposite of what the translator/editor are paid to do.

Addition: This vexes me even more since the rest of the translation is really good, as far as I can tell. So absolutely unnecessary.
What I was trying to say here is... I doubt Zwei looked through a Western baby names book when he picked that name. Even if there happens to be an obscure Western name that sounds the same, it has no relation to the name he picked, and so it's not a spelling mistake just because it doesn't match the Western name.

For purely hypothetical purposes, suppose that there was a Japanese man with a name that romanized to Miki. Would that spelling be incorrect, in favor of Mickey, even though his parents had never thought of the word Mickey in the naming?

The other points regarding consistency between translations do make sense, but I don't think it can be called a spelling mistake. Rather a matter of preference, and not worth being concerned about how one translator or the other prefers to spell it, it all means the same thing.

Each episode of Phantom is a testament to the core strengths of the Beetrain "Girls with Guns" subgenre. As usual, this latest episode is another great one where the most significant action isn't of Eren and Reiji getting taken in by their respective masters, but something as simple, and yet poignant, as Eren getting a new name for herself. We get further development of her being unable to shoot herself - an inability that should have been fairly foreign to the Ein of old.

So far, Claudia is the standout character - already she's surpassed all of the other villains in the other Beetrain shows (with the possible exception of Chloe). Even though her motivations are as obvious as her machinations, it's easy to see just why her moves are so effective, and why there isn't much that Reiji can do against her. It's also rather nice to not hear some character commenting about how skillful Claudia is - that's something that's so plain to see that it'd be just redundant.

It's certainly no secret that the Beetrain "Girls with Guns" shows are strongly based on Luc Besson films, and I wouldn't be surprised if Phantom's similiarity is what drew Beetrain to the project (or vice versa). All we need is a Jean Reno cameo to close that particular circle .

While I'm not familiar with Miki being a name for Japanese men, your comparison is a little bit off. The name "Miki" is romanized a certain way because of romanization conventions. Since Eren and Elen are functionally the same thing vis a vis the Japanese original, it'd have been a lot better had the translator chosen the version that properly reflects the gender of the character. This isn't really a case of preference either unless you somehow think that the intention of the translation was to associate the character with the connotations of the name "Eren". I'd imagine that this isn't the case since it's not exactly the most well-known of names.

I can accept that point - on purely technical terms, it's no "spelling mistake". But it was a very VERY bad decision in my book, and a sign of either very poor preparation and no editing (most likely), or of regrettable translator arrogance (unlikely, but not unheard of). Why forcefully tear fans out of their world? Heck even if the TL deemed it below his/her honor to play the English version before starting, a simple look at the wikipedia page would have already cleared things up.

*sigh*

Well, it's a moot point. Releases consistent with the game have started, and I heard that even Funi-script based fansubs will begin to edit them.

I personally didn't think I'd enjoy this as much as I am, given that I already have a good grasp of the story from the game. But it really is a testament to how good the story and characters are that it's still enjoyable.

On the note about the name, it really isn't a big enough deal to debate over. Eren, Elen, Ellen, Erin, whatever...

I finally caught up.

Eren, Elen, Erin......whatever.

It would have been nice if they kept the game name "Elen" but maybe there was a reason for the name change other than translator error. Technically, it is a minor annoyance to read "Elen" and hear "Eren". Since Eren is potentially going to be used more as Ein's name, it can become a major annoyance if you keep reading "Elen".

Nice eps. Reiji's devotion to Eren is awesome. Claudia needs a bullet in her head imo.

Edit: I think it's cool that her name means "Saint". Girls can use male names also.

As least we can all agree it starts with an E, right? I've said it before, "E-chan", seems like a good nickname. It would cover every name she could be called.

Have to say, episode 10 was quite epic. Though I don't like those "lankey" animations that a lot of anime are using nowadays. Kind of worked here to show Zwei acting like a demon, but otherwise don't like that kind.

Simply Amazing for ep 10

God I love that Reiji expression. He SCARED the shit out of me

Spoiler for Ep 10:

Haaah isn't it fun to watch Phantom? Glad that it would be 26 episode. The episode really powerful that I don't give a damn about the name "Eren" anymore

PS: damn Reiji looks really cool in the preview

Epic episode indeed. Reji went off the deep end.lol. The Reji/Scythe hunt scene was very well done. Loved it, i was hoping Reji would get to kill him but realized what was about to happen. Can't wait for next week.

I think Zwei's actions for ep.10 was overly drammatic to the point that I wanted to stop watching (I just didn't like his posture in some scenarios, he looked like a mentally challenged patient with a gun). Thank god this wasn't the last episode as I previously assumed, otherwise I'd be sorely dissapointed (I had no basis for it being the last episode, it just looked like it was). Anyways, too bad for Zwei. I guess Ein's identity was stronger than Eren's (at least for now?). Well, looking forward to next week.

The main thing that's good for me about this series is the pacing and storyboarding. Things move at a fast but controlled clip. Ep10 was another great one, in that regard, as well as in the human relationships, the evolving under-story, and in the drama. Over-dramatic, maybe, but for a purpose. The animation and backgrounds were not the best they have been, but it all worked for me.

I enjoyed this episode! Perfect 10!!!

However there were a couple of frustrating moments, I know they do it this way so that the story can continue however...

Why the F Reiji just took the whole time in the world to shoot! I know he wanted to show Scythe fear before dying(that's was i think) but comon! Hell I even thought he was Jason(friday 13th) , he was just walking after him, slowly walking! Don't ask me how but he manages to catch up to him.

And second, why the F did "Ellen" just jumped in and saved Scythe, she is stupid. She could have just stayed behind and relax while Reiji killed that bastard. Then she would have been free with Reiji.
hmmm you know, I think she deserved to die, if she's stupid enough to give her life to some bastard like that, then hell, I would have shoot her myself.
