I really liked how the show made failure out to be something that can indeed be celebrated despite the negative connotations typically associated with it. Pretty much every major and sub-major character in this show fails in one way or another as mentioned, but it's precisely because of those failures that allows their personalities and characters to flourish. I wouldn't have had it any other way tbh and I attribute that factor as one of the reasons behind the show's lasting impact.

It was certainly a... unique experience. I can't think of any other series that was so positive about this level of failure on the characters' part. At least not without a greater emphasis on what can be done to "make up" for it.

Katanagatari is a wonderful failure but it is implied that Kiki Shikazaki(?) gave up on the plan centuries ago..

After all she is the one who ordered Togame to be killed. So him allowing her to follow along with him means he must want to keep her around for some reason. If Shichika really wanted her to stop following him like he says then he could easily have done it by killing her as revenge for Togame or he could have just ran so fast that she'd never catch up. I imagine that he keeps her around to fight off his loneliness since she has some similarities to Togame and maybe he punishes her in different ways particularly at night. I have mixed feelings about them being together since they represent each others greatest failure yet, at the same time I'd be sad if each of them died alone with Shichika completing Togame's map by himself. Togame wouldn't have wanted him to complete the map by himself. It was a sad story regardless but it definitely wasn't forced sadness that you sometimes see in anime. You can understand why it had to end the way it did. Also the way it ended definitely has much more lasting impact since I'm still thinking about it today years after it was first released.
