I thought this thread was the character development of Yui. All I am seeing is the debate of racism, military protocols, and two characters at each other's neck.
Yui, she trikes me to someone who is straight to the point and blunt about her criticism. I like that, there aren't that many strong female characters like Yui. She is very strong as well, she went easy on Team Yuuya and still got the better of them. If she went full out, none of them would have a chance to counter attack, fortunately for them Yui just wanted to test out their strength and teach Yuuya what it means to pilot a machine that centers on Mobility than strength. Strangely enough Yui reminds me of a sleeping beauty that is on my bed right now, no wonder I like her. |

The US has a different type of mobility i.e. hit-and-run vs Japanese's hand-to-hand agility. Recall, Yuuya was labled as "an elite at running" (EP03). As for Yui, before the BETA attacked her home town, Yui doesn't seem to have an icy shield/wall (in EP01).... Spoiler for manga issue 1:
Yui seems to raise her "shields" around team Yuuya. Last edited by encia; 2012-08-04 at 02:36. |

Just a question, would any of you consider Yui to be a Yamato Nadeshiko? Or at least partly? It never occurred to me before, but the term suddenly came to mind when I saw this image above. Yamato Nadeshiko: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.ph...amatoNadeshiko |

I would say that at least partially, yes.
It would make sense too, given that she is from what would amount to minor nobility in more Western-esque country, so it's logical that her mother would try to raise her like that. Plus, she is reserved in a way, conscious about her behavior and how it will reflect on others...and she does have a considerable resolve underneath it all. But at the same time, she can be really hard-headed and blunt at the times, like during TEs early volumes/anime episodes. Of course, we have to consider that her upbringing was somewhat warped by her military service, the ridiculous notions that Guard units tend do spout and her own experiences with, well, growing up. The way she reacts to the notion that she might be in love, or how she involuntarily cries during Episode 13 would suggest that she doesn't exactly know how to handle her emotions. Which isn't surprising, given her past. I would imagine though, that in a peaceful world, she would be more of Yamato Nadeshiko, and if she married, say, Yuuya, she'd definitely go with some similar attitude when they would be in private - except, you know, the moments when you have to beat something into your partners skull.

Yui's in an emotional pressure coooker, IMO. She's been repressing her emotions for so long, trying to be a good Eishi filled with the ridiculous notions Guard units sprout, that the emotional pressure is now leaking, despite her best efforts to keep herself locked down.
Remember: she told herself she wouldn't cry anymore and locked her feelings away... but there's only so much one can do, and the valves leak in Episode 13. And of course, her amusingly adorkable reaction to realising that she's fallen for Yuuya in Episode 15: shyly, hesitantly, she tries out his name... and then realises "Oh crap, I've fallen for him."

Seems that's actually coming back to bite her in the ass now too in the whole love race game since it's apparently put her way behind the others now since they never really had the same unpleasantness that Yui/Yuuya's relationship started with. It's pretty rare that you see a tsundereish character actually have to own up to their past bitchiness, which is why I kind of liked that "Oh crap" moment when Chinese Haruhi confronted her with their past at the end of episode 19 even if the rest of the episode was kind of meh.

Spoiler for Just in case:
Isn't the whole point of Muv Luv anyway putting Harem Characters in an Om Nom Nom Nom Grimdark universe setting, and seeing how their characters develop, to begin with? It should be quite obvious from the anime itself that they were playing with Harem Archtypes here. |
