Anyways, back on track. If there was any anime male that actually deserved a harem, it'd be Sergei... most likely because he wouldn't really want one, but let's face it: he's as smooth as a Ken doll. That lady-type in the first episode could not resist the Sergei. Two of the principle brats can't resist the Sergei. With the proper circumstance, even Chie could not resist The Sergei. There is not a single female organism alive that does not worship The Sergei... even Shizuru kneels at his altar!!
...all kidding aside, Sergei's become the main reason why I've stuck with this trainwreck and I'm betting that he and Mai some kind of history together. And despite the theories to the contrary, it'd be a serious mistake to say it was someone else THIS late in the show.

Spoiler for absolutely nothing, but a drabble that's still related and excessively long to NOT snip...:
As the transport vehicle rumbled over the barren desert, the North Hound found the trip to be a much greater burden on him that he was willing to admit. In the back of the transport, the five first Valkyrie squad of Artai was most likely conversing with one another about their mission. It was a mission that he himself had volunteered for, but to say he was completely calm would have been a complete lie.
"Penny for your thoughts, sir?" a new voice asked from behind.
He turned to see Chie, the door opened and closed silently, walking in and taking the other chair in the cockpit.
He cocked an eyebrow. "A penny?"
Chie gave a humored smile and continued, "the expression wouldn't sound right if it were a quarter or a dime, would it?"
Sergei drifted his attention back to the road and answered, "True, but I doubt now's the time for expressions from the Homeworld."
Chie's smile slowly faded. He could tell there was something bothering her. It looked like his calm was not as clear and solid as it had once been, especially if his anxiety could so easily spread to the troops he was to command.
She looked over to him and asked without hesitating, "Permission to speak freely, sir."
Sergei's attention didn't waver as he replied cautiously. "Granted."
There was a tense silence, even after he had responded. He gave a sideward glance at his companion, who appeared to be studying him as opposed to simply addressing him as a commanding officer. The look in her eyes pretty much spoke that with his permission granted, she was going to speak to him person to person, not solider to leader.
"Why did you volunteer for this mission?"
Sergei smirked a bit. He could stare men twice his size and mass down without breaking a sweat, and here was a teenage girl from the Academy, with the sheer audacity to think she could address the North Hound so casually... perhaps it was that audacity that provoked him to answer truthfully. "I have my reasons... but if you must know, it's all for Nina."
Now it was Chie's turn to act surprised. "Oh? And little Arika's got nothing to do with it, eh?"
He turned to her and gave her the same stare that he had used against Yamada not a few weeks prior. "Someone's rather nosy."
Chie, unafraid, shrugged her shoulders casually and reclined in her seat to get more comfortable, "when you listen, you hear things that most people miss. It's a fault, I know, but I can't resist."
Sergei almost chuckled. "That can get you into trouble, you realize."
Chie's smirk only grew. "All the more reason to. Life'd be pretty boring if everyone kept to themselves."
He gave a sidewise glance to her, meeting her almost mischevious gaze eye to eye. There was nothing antagonistic in her eyes and, oddly enough, he felt at ease with her around.
"Can I confide in you, Ms. Hallard?" he ventured.
Knowing she had made some headway, she drew her index finger across her heart twice, "hope to die."
He paused for a second, wondering just how old Ms. Hallard did act. She was indeed around her seventeenth year, but she could easily switch to something closer to his age, and then to that of a trusting child in a heartbeat.
"It's true, about Antsy, I mean. I have a feeling that perhaps she's the daughter of Rena Sayers... and if she is... I wanted her to have a chance she didn't because of the attacks all those years ago..." he found the words he wanted to say flee from him before he could continue.
Across from him, Chie's smile only grew. "So, even the legendary North Hound is an old-fashioned romantic at heart... and a gentleman. That's very sweet." The tone in her voice wasn't cruel, nor sarcastic. In fact, it was as sincere as she had vowed to be only a few minutes prior.
Sergei's eyebrows rose as he broke the current tense atmosphere once more. "You going to tease me about that now?"
Chie shook her head once and her countenance grew warm as she answered. "Not at all. In fact, it makes me think that's it's unfortunate that you're not a king."
Sergei found himself surprised at that last statement. He was born, raised, and trained as a soldier. It was never the cause, it was the country and her people that gave him cause to fight for so long.
He answered calmly as the mountain range where the Black Valley slowly came into view, "I think you give me too much credit."
Chie replied evenly, "I don't think you give yourself enough. Besides, I say that because had the circumstances been different, I would have been glad to be your Otome."
Again, Sergei found himself surprised by the sheer boldness of the former Coral. "Again, I think you give me too much credit."
Chie turned back to watch the incoming mountains. "I don't know about that. Everytime I see Nina, I hear her talking about you. She always smiles whenever you're brought up in conversation. Because of you, she's happy. Any man that can make his daughter that happy with the very mention of his kindness is no less a nobleman than any king in my book."
Sergei involuntarily remembered his last unfortunate encounter his his adopted child. He knew he adopted her to be the Otome for Artai... but it still tore him up to see her acting the way she was. She was placing a gap between them he could never hope to cross unless she made the bridge to do so. He loved his daughter, that much was certain, but lately, it was becoming harder to do so and he didn't want to wildly speculate why. He missed the love of his daughter and it left a void that he could feel and he didn't like it.
Realizing her mistake, Chie backed down and said, "Sorry. I should have known that..."
"No," he interrupted, "much has changed and I fear that perhaps it can only get worse."
Chie ventured a possibility. "Losing your loved ones because of duty. I can only imagine."
He remembered Rena and the day he heard she had been murdered and grit his teeth momentarily. "Unfortunately, I know what it's like. I can only pray it doesn't happen again."
So focused he was on the road that he didn't notice Chie standing up and walking over to his seat. He almost jumped when she knelt beside him and said quietly, "If it's of any comfort, sir. You will not face it alone." Her face was serious and conveyed such a feeling of trust and honesty that he had never seen before. it was comforting. It was as if she was unofficially proclaiming herself as his Otome.
He gave her a small smile and said during a nod, "Thank you, Ms. Hallard." At the heads up display on the dash board, a small beeping notice informed them they were at the check point to beging the operation.
"I'll get the others ready," Chie said quickly, her professional demeanor returning in an instant and heading back to the passanger area.
He brought the vehicle to a stop, stood up and checked to see if his gun was loaded with a full clip. The sound of his gun always gave him a gentle reminder of how secure he was because of his aiming proficiency. However, the fact he was hunting two fifteen year old girls left a sour taste in his mouth. If it came to blows, then the Valkyrie squad would even the odds in his favor. But if it turned out she had gotten more powerful, then he could be in trouble.
He knew that eventually, going on dangerous missions would cost him dearly. Death had nearly claimed him on more than one occasion and his luck would run out. It was time to test his good fortune once more as he turned to the back and readied his speech for the group.
so it came to conclude that rena is connected to miyu? now am so anxious to find out who really is arika grandma ..since at first i guess its mai -_-" but from the preview of esp 23 it proved me all wrong....
Look at my signature ... I'm not saying Mashiro(MO) is her grandma, just that they might reuse that caracter for the job of kickass grany ... I personally can't imagine Arika's grany as a old person.
Although I hope she dosen't steal Arika's starring role I hope she at least is as uber-powerful as Kira in combat. She deserves as much.
The last thing we need is yet another ultra-mega-hyper-uber powerful character, who decides everything on her own, if you ask me. But anyone stealing the main role from Arika would be great, albeit too late. I'd much rather have Mai being the Kira of this show than Arika.

Yet another forbidden 'couple' is born...> I really like that idea of Chie being Sergei's Otome now - they got good potential chemistry And for anyone horrified at the very idea - ~~. They'd actually make a sensible Otome/Master pairing. They could even go on 'dates' together to see who can get the most girls in an hour... XD
I have to say that everyone acted quite naturally to the events that took place this eppy. Well, Nina acted naturally for Nina whenever 'Daddy's' involved - attack the nearst Ant Head.
Although now, I wonder how the survivors and the wounded fell this time. We know that Arika and Mashiro end up with the Mai/Mikoto/Miyu faction...I suppose that 85% says that Artai collected their losses and got out. I just hope that Nagi doesn't hold a pwning Miyu against Sergei for losing this one.
I guess Doremi misheard 'Merciful' back in episode 18 when Miyu said her name.
Listening now it does sound like she is saying Merciful as opposed to Multiple.
This is true -- when I was first watching the episode in which she explains her name, I had a tough time accepting what the subs were suggesting, since it really didn't sound as though Miyu was saying "multiple". Oh well, I'm fairly certain any future dialogue containing Miyu's full name will use the correct translation. We're dynamic in that regard

I think she was old. I would think that she was an ex Otome who fought in the last war. Quite possibly the one that killed her best friend, i.e. killed Miss Maria's Sempai.

I am sure that everyone noticed the statement, but I would hardly call it an unsubtile hint since I would not consider Arika's grandmother saying something similar to Yuhko being an indication of anything other than having similar beliefs. Arika didn't seem to notice any similarities. If we have had a glimpse of Arika's grandmother then it was likely in Miss Maria's flashback.
The chemistry... that was just great. Ah... and now I'm reminded of Tempest35's "Sergay The Player" short in the "What a Mai Hime/Mai Otome character would never say??" thread.
The North Hound is pretty much a main reason I've stayed with this series. Things are looking up, but in the end, like one person said Otome will be another "could've been" series. Sometimes I think 26 episodes is too short these days. I think with 30ish episodes this would've been a bit more balanced and had a smoother flow.
Too bad the only HiME/Otome fics I've ever seen are basically Shizuru x Natsuki. Oh well .
It almost makes me want to polish up my writing skills and start a North Hound fic, not necessarily with an explicit pairing.
Y'know, I have to wonder if becoming Sergay's 'go to' girl on the Valkryie squad is not just a ploy on Chie's part to get more vital information to send back to her home country. If it proves true, I'm sure that Sergay has already picked up on this (if he's already known about Nina's feelings, he surely has to pick up on this age-old tactic). Not that it's not commendable. C'mon North Hound, just survive until Mai comes back with Arika and Mikoto to put the smackdown along with the 'Otome Coalition Forces'...
And no, Yukino's not nearly old enough to be anyone's grandmother. She just told Midori that the 'eye for an eye' revenge thing is useless and that's what Arika told her as well so Midori made that verbal comparison about Arika's words being similar to what she had heard before. If anything, that may be a clue as to how and why Midori and Yohko went separate ways.

When Chie volunteered and asked if Sergay was displeased, he simply replied that he's more calm now with her on the team.
Okay I admit that Chie has better chemistry with Sergay than any of the other girls so far. But what's with the desire to pair Sergay with ever girl on the Mai Otome roster? Sergay has a big scar on his face. Why not pair these girls with Nagi? Nagi is the freaking man! He's kind of short, I will admit......but he's the king of a country! He's not some bumpkin officer like Sergay.

First off, you misunderstand. We say there's 'possible' chemistry between them as people and compatriots in the common goal, despite both having ulterior motives, because they're more mature than most of the cast and as in many cases, such charaters get along better than immature ones. I only went further with the drabble because we all know it's impossible but we wanna see how it'd look anyway. It's not limited to whether or not they'd be 'right for another' or not.
Also, you have no proof that Sergei and Mai weren't an item before, just as we have no proof that they were, but we still maintain that Sergei could have been that man in the picture since there's been NO other explanation about it since it's been placed as an obviously unimportant subplot. Just because you don't see it doesn't mean other people can't. Regardless, it's pointless to say whether it is or isn't according to one's 'intuition' or, in the case of Otome, libido.
I do agree that most harem male leads are spineless and immature weenies, Sergei, on the other hand is not and as a result, it wouldn't be as annoying since he'd probably settle things faster than any other lead of the aforementioned sub-genre.
Getting back to the episode, Nina got furious because she saw her father injured as a result of Arika's connection to Miyu. I highly doubt she'd go berserk if Sergei had been seeing someone else. Yes, she's immature in some ways, but I highly doubt she'd react so violently, and perhaps she'd get rid of her daddy complex, if she truly understood that her father had eyes for another woman. She'd either accept it begrudgingly or she'd probably have a emotionally gut wrenching heart to heart with her father.
In conclusion: My money's still on 'Sergei x Mai'.
Not sure if this has been mentioned before but since Argos is dead, would his son (?) Kazuya take over? And if so, would Akane advance to become his Otome? I'd love to see Akane back again as an Otome. But I guess that'd be too many characters at once. I still don't see how they can fit so many unannounced Otome in the next few episodes.
Whatever happened to the first two Otome from Lutecia who fought?
Sakuya, was it actually said that Kazuya was the heir to the throne? Maybe it was but I have no recollection. All I know is that Kazuya was part of one of the three most powerful families in Carlteya.
