Appleseed CG Film
AnimeNation has posted news of a new trailer for the upcoming Appleseed Movie.
http://www.animenation.net/news/index.php?id=5740 or http://www.a-seed.jp The bits of footage shown are a lot better than the "tech-demo" stuff we saw on the DVDs that came with the three Appleseed firgures last year. I'm a big Shirow fan, and Appleseed is (IMO obviously) his best work. After the disastrous Appleseed OVA, I was wondering if anyone would ever do Shirow's favorite child justice in animated form. I have to say I'm a little exited about the film now. The film will be completely CG, but is designed to look like the characters are hand drawn. I really don't think that Appleseed is suited to the film format. Only a TV or OVA series would be able to capture the philisophical and political depth of the Appleseed world without stripping away the complexity of the story's concepts. However, I'm not complaining. Appleseed deserves attention. Can't tell much from the trailer, although I hope they're not trying to make the film too much like Ghost in the Shell (ie jumping off tall buildings, and a museum-like setting). I see story elements of Books 2 (the bio-roid council members & a floating gun platform?), 4 (the short-sword battle -- please? drool), and Hypernotes (the female 'borg with the hyper-vibrating whips) displayed in the trailer, along with a running leap off a highrise building in Olympus(?). Just watch the trailer, please. |

Holy crap that was sweet! I cannot wait till that comes out! Do you know what the release date is? Or if it's already licensed? If that turns out as cool as it looks, it will definatly land on the very exclusive "Anime I will buy" list. Personally I liked the OVA (maybe because I didn't read the Manga) but the crappy music did make me want to take a swan dive like the girl in the opening.
Thanks for the link!

Like FinFangFoom's case, the official site isn't working for me. Bummer! Downloading the Quicktime file now. Thanks for the heads-up, and I agree that Appleseed would make a fantastic TV or OAV series. In fact, I think that's really the only way to do the story/world true justice. It will be very nice to see Shirow's original "bad girl" kick ass on film though. _________________________________________ After seeing the Quicktime link trailer: OH! MY! GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope the story matches the visuals. In Japanese theatres April 17 (Saturday)! WOW! I love that they're sticking to Shirow's mechanical designs, Landmates, 'borgs, buildings, Spider Gun Platforms, etc. They've even got details right, like the trigger finger being cut out of Deunan's gloves. I don't think I've ever looked forward to a film more than this. Last edited by Briareos; 2004-02-02 at 14:45. |

Reading my own posts about this film is hilarious. I play the raving fanboy perfectly. LOL
Seriously though, I do have my reservations and worries about this production. Take for instance the line at the end of the trailer, "When this war is over, I want to be a mother." One of the nice things about the Appleseed manga is the understated relationship of Deunan (the lead blond woman that kicks ass in the trailer) and Briareos (the cyborg who kicks even more ass). In a slow moment in Vol4 of the manga, Spoiler:

I'll be keeping my fingers crossed until I see the film. Last edited by Briareos; 2004-03-03 at 10:22. |

I'll be the bodyguard/interpreter of course........ "Kono hito ha Shirow Masamune - sama desu yo" Er probably not the best thing to say...... Last edited by tsurumaru; 2004-03-03 at 12:36. |

The movie was so fantastic, amazing CG graphics and animation, the best I've ever seen to date! It had a manga-based plot and some absolute kick-ass fight scenes. We even met with the producer, Sori, afterwards! He was a lovely guy who signed our free promo posters! We also got on Japanese TV, being interviewed about what we thought about it. Sadly, we weren't allowed into the gig as we had no tickets, despite the official site stating it was open to all fans. Sorry, I have to do this - hahahahahaha I was one of the first people to ever see it!!!! nyerrrrrrr! I'll gladly answer any questions about the movie you might have. |

Before I ask you anything about the film, have you read the manga? If so, what are your thoughts on the manga volumes? I just want to frame the context of your thoughts on the film a little. |

Sadly I wasn't able to make it to the World Premiere .
However the Official site has been updated with a groovy front end, hopefully we'll see some more trailers soon. Last edited by tsurumaru; 2004-03-09 at 15:17. |

I haven't ever been able to get the trailers from the official site to load. The links come up as broken for me. I wonder what my problem is. Probably an microsoft XP thing. I love the shot of Briareos on the Film Info:Commentary page. http://www.a-seed.jp/film-info/commentary/index.html Last edited by Briareos; 2004-03-09 at 18:56. |

I hadn't actually checked out the official site when this originally came up. I hadn't seen the latest trailer. Shows more non-action stuff. I'm dying to see how much stuff they make up that's not in the manga and what they do with it.
Anyone else getting their hopes up for this movie? I better not be severly let down. |

Right now, I'm just really happy that Briareos, the Land Mates, the Guges-Ds (a type of Land Mate with flight capabilities), and the Spider Gun Platforms look exactly like Shirow's designs. Shirow mechs look like nobody elses. They look extremely cool and imaginative, while having roots in real world tech -- and a touch of the fantastic. i.e. With a few fairly major scientific breakthroughs (like Hermis -- a hightened state of matter that floats and is used to make the Guges-Ds fly) the tech would be believable.
I'm hoping that the "Another Beauty and the Beast" line from the Quicktime trailer is not a prominant story component. There's nothing like that in the manga. Briareos may wish to have his "face back", but Deunan seems totally indifferent to the fact that her lover is a 'borg. At least he's still got the plumbing to make babies. (See the Appleseed Databook on that one.) I do have high hopes, but I expect to be let down somewhat by the film. (Just a hunch.) Anyhow, all I can do is sit tight and wait to see it, and wonder if I really want to ask the people who have seen it questions. |
