Also, isn't the Crest of the Stars/Banner/etc. series based on a series of novels?

I'd probably buy English translations of the books that anime I like are based on. Actually, the only time I tried to do that it sucked because there were translations but they're hella hard to get ahold of - Miyazawa Kenji. Add his name to the list too! He's fantastic. Unfortunately the only good translation of Milkyway Railway is somewhere around $40. It's really good though, I suggest you all.. I don't know.. do what I did and ask for it for Christmas or something. >< lol

I love to read, and I would definitely read Record of Lodoss Wars if the novel became available, since it's one of my all time favorite animes. But it would just suck if I ended up not liking it, then I wouldn't know if I just don't like the writer or if it's due to bad translation.

Does anyone have lots of experiance reading translated books? Do they generally live up to the hype from their original country?

As far as Japanese novels translated and sold in America, we already have a big hype machine that is willing to turn its attention to these works. Whenever I get a paperback edition of something it has blurbs about the book from American publications. Same goes for Chinese novels too.

A couple of books I read were disappointing in that they were only genre fiction and didn't make it as literature. I have also read lesser works by major authors. But overall I think that the writers and books selected for translation are of a very high quality.
