It's been a loooong time since I've been on Animesuki Forums. Finally binge-read through the manga after getting interested via a TVTropes summary, and found it right up my alley. I'll try support the author by getting the manga itself...
What should I say? It's a very gut-wrenching series, but in all the ways that I appreciate. Series that go dark can oftentimes go too dark for me, making me lose interest (eg. World Embryo), but the focus on the core group and them sticking together made for a lotta heart. Sure, the manga might have meandered a bit during the university arc, but I feel like the arc has been vindicated in tankobon form, since you're not spending months between chapters now. I'm just so glad they all made it out alive~~~

Haha, there's a new contender in that contest now...
I just picked up the anime a few weeks ago, and found both the manga and the sequel online. What surprises me the most is how much Kurumi has changed. She's... Spoiler for Future Kurumi:

Honestly, I think the mangaka had intended for Kurumi to die but the editor was against it and that's how we got to the current Kurumi. I dunno, reading Kurumi's "future" story it just feels like it was done as an extra and not really as intended. And it would fit the whole slow demise of Kurumi, losing feeling of her body, etc. The ending might have been an entirely different one for all we know.

I'm thinking about picking up the anime in the next couple days. Would you ppl say the animated series is a good adaptation of the manga? Would I need to keep reading the manga afterwards to get the full story? (not that I mind, just trying to get an idea).

Sounds like a start with the manga deal then, thanks.
edit: or so I thought, but then the first comment on amazon reviews with the mangas is to start with the anime to increase the emotional impact. hah

I don't know about that. The anime didn't have time to cover the first arc so they turned a freaking dog into the emotional core of the climax, and that obviously can't compare to what happens in the manga. All in all, I would recommend to just ignore the anime and go read the manga instead. It's a whole different experience.

Actually, I think this way fits the story more. From the very beginning, the school has been kind of civilization's anchor. It's the girls' physical refuge from the apocalypse. It's Yuki's emotional refuge that she runs to in her mind. It's where they have to go back to in order to find the cure. So it makes sense that it would also be where Yuki would go to do her part in building the world again.

I actually kind of liked the anime for what it was... you definitely still need to read the manga from chapter 1 afterwards though.
I don't know what you guys are on about Otayori though. Although its still catching up with everybody right now. |
