If you ask me, I think some fans are worried about a paradigm shift that's going to occur with the type of anime being produce from here on out. Have you ever noticed every time KyoAni produced a real hit, they've more or less solidified a trend? All those Key adaptations proved you can produce a solid work based on a VN; the Haruhi Suzumiya series jump started light novel anime adaptations; K-ON brought forth lots more moe-induced shows especially ones based on 4-komas.

I bet they're afraid if Free does become a real hit, there's going to be a lot more bishounen-filled shows in the next couple seasons. Not next season though because that one is surprisingly more bishoujo-filled despite Free being premiered then so enjoy your summer season while it lasts!

pfft...the real thing that solidified VN adaptations was Shaft and Ef

Even so, it isn't as if a single season is overrun with such trending themes and nothing else.

If they aren't as pretty as the Hakkenden or Karneval anime then no dice

I don't think that is a big deal, their audiences (or just anime in general) is always dominant male. And I believe bishonen-filled shows doesn't always mean to target female audiences only.

True, there are shounen shows like Magi and Hunter x Hunter that tend to end up being fangirl favorite as a by-product. I guess putting it conversely, they're afraid there's going a huge decrease of titles featuring mostly/all-female casts which I find rather dubious.

Because wow KyoAni has been churning out highly thought provoking philosophical works like Friedrich Nietzsche in his prime before this
I myself like The Melancholy of Sigmund Freud...

anyway, I agree with whomever said this: If the series is a success, then it would be pretty cool to see the cast at Rio for the following season.

As long as there are cute girls around the otaku crowd has no need to worry about fap material going away

I liked those shows but K is where its at for bishonen....XP

Design wise, the main kid and Miyano's character are kind of cute....but everyone else looks generic to me.

The employees of Animation DO were always exclusively working for Kyoani; after all, Animation DO = Kyoani. They've been there since the late 90s, IIRC.

A sudden rush of new employees for DO won't happen just because they've moved up in the credits list. What might happen is that they're more involved with the production of this series than they've been on previous Kyoani shows (well, they already are, since the chief director is from DO). Perhaps, some staff members will be promoted to animation directors or unit directors over at DO.

The themes are swimming, friendship and torsos. Got to love that last one.

Am I the only one for whom no Crunchyroll link has ever worked in all of human history?

Goddammit I could have had that kind of body if I wasn't lazy and actually joined the swim team in school!

What you can expect from a studio staffed to the brim with fujoshi.

This is a curious thing.

Until now, in almost all programs that attract fujoshis (which I've seen), the boys were slim and do not have much muscle.

It's because there is a lack of the desired amount of muscle. Muscle was associated with bodybuilder bodies, because of the 80's and 90's western movies. That kind of stuff isn't healthy. Even in recent manga and anime that kind of muscle is still the mainstream.

Though one has to wonder if visible muscle is even possible on primary school children, as was the case in the source material.

Muscular males have always been prevalent in KyoAni shows. Kyon has a six-pack and Houtarou somehow has abs of steel despite being a lazy guy.

Sagara was one of the few that made complete sense.

Cheers.

A track record that's overwhelmingly tilted towards shows aimed at males?
