a lot of this info helps put this into perspective. TV Tokyo always escaped me though, some people have called it the NHK of the commercial networks because they can get away with lower ratings for shows overall. japanese wiki says that the cut off point for prime time tv shows to be viable is 10% while TV-tokio is 6% generally. Anyone know why that is?
Also with realitvely "higher rated" late night anime such as Noitamina and NTV headliners, does that mean there could be actually profitablity from the broadcast, as opposed to how normal latenight showings are (which are essentially infomercials, sold to each local station)? |

(A "television household" is one with at least one TV. That constitutes over 99% of households in the US.) Nielsen doesn't assume there are only 110 million TVs in the US, but 110 million television households. In the sampled households every set is monitored either with a meter or with diaries (one diary per TV). Since most homes in the US have multiple sets it's certainly possible in theory for the sum of the household ratings for all shows in a given timeslot to exceed 100%. (Since some fraction of the households are not watching TV, exceeding 100% may not happen very often in practice. Viewing is highest on Sunday evenings in the winter, but even then if my recollection serves me, only about 70-80% of households have a television turned on.) Advertisers are usually less interested in household ratings than person ratings (the percent of people watching a given show) and even more interested in the ratings within certain key demographics. For decades the primary target audience was women 18-39 years of age, since they were seen as the primary purchasers of the types of consumer products television has advertised since its infancy. Nowadays there's much more targeted marketing, of course, especially since cable and satellite delivery fractured the audience. To deliver person ratings Nielsen uses "people meters" in some markets and diaries everywhere else. (rooboy and I have talked about these technologies previously in this thread so I won't go into them here.) For instance, Mom and Sis might be watching American Idol on TV #1, while Dad watches The Golf Channel on TV#2, little Bobby plays Halo on TV#3, and TV#4 is turned off. The ladies count toward the person ratings of American Idol, Dad counts toward the person ratings of TGC, and Bobby doesn't count into the ratings of any show. At the household level this household counts twice, once in the ratings for Idol and again in the ratings for TGC.

Imagine a world with three networks, Red, Blue, and Yellow. On a given night, their programming draws the following household ratings:
Here the program on the Red network draws a quarter of all the households, but since 40% of the households aren't using TV at this time, that 25% rating translates into a 42% share of the 60% of households that are using television. I believe Japanese ratings at Video Research use the same methodology as Nielsen based on the English-language materials on their site. The sample design is based on households, and up to eight TVs in a given household are measured, either with "people meters" or with diaries depending on the location. If a household has three TVs, and they're all tuned to different programs, then that household is counted in the viewing column for each program when household ratings are calculated. These techniques are so well-established across the world that I doubt Japan has a radically different method of tabulation than does the US. So a rating of 1% should mean that at least one television was tuned to that program in about 480,000 households.

Sazae-san, from what I have heard, is like what The Simpsons is in the U.S. It's a show that is about everyday life and uses humor from Japanese culture. I'm sure someone else on these boards can be more specific, but that's what I have understood from reading this forum.
I believe Chibi Maruko-chan and Shin-chan are the same thing. Although those shows are episodic, they have very strong mainstream audience appeal, and those three shows have been around for 10+ years at least. |

Sazae-san is, as far as I know, the longest running cartoon in all of civilization.
No, I'm dead serious. There has been 1900 episodes of Sazae-san cartoon, as of March 2007. That's right... 1900 Episodes. Insane, isn't it? No cartoon in any country in the world comes even close... not even in the same DIGITS of episodes made. (The Simpsons is 400 episodes total) It's a sit-com family cartoon series based on a manga series of the same name, and has been running since 1969. The character never freakin age. Even if each episode was a day, the youngest little boy would be through college... but time doesn't pass. Every single episode is about absolutely nothing. Every day stuff, that's barely humorous at all. If you watch any episode of Sazae-san, you've watched it all. Nightengale is right when he says all Japanese knows the show. Even if there's concievably a Japanese somewhere that somehow doesn't know the name of their prime minister, or what year the current year is, he/she will know what Sazae-san is.

TV Audience Ratings for a Number of Spring 2007 Anime Shows
Television audience ratings in Japan can be obtained in a number of ways: 1) people (e.g., employees) who have access to inside formation from the Japanese ratings research firm Video Research Ltd., who then may post TV audience ratings on their blogs, message boards like 2ch, etc.; 2) contacting Fuji TV and NTV by telephone a day or so after programs have aired on their station to get the TV audience ratings (this reportedly cannot be done with NHK, TBS, TV Asahi, TV Tokyo); 3) getting TV audience ratings for shows two or more weeks after they have aired at the National Diet Library; 4) news media reports; 5) animation company press releases; 6) Video Research Ltd.'s official website (usually just the top 10 in various categories {news, animation, movies, sports, etc.}); and whatever else I have left out.
Recently, someone posted at 2ch the TV audience ratings of the first six to eight episodes for a number of late night anime series which debuted during spring 2007 in Japan. I cannot vouch for their accuracy, but presumably they got the data from the National Diet Library. Note: As a NTV program, Claymore's TV audience ratings (episodes 1-11 so far) can be independently verified by phone and posted on threads at message boards like 2ch. Kissdum is doing a lot better than I would have expected O_o I would have thought if it was a trainwreck it would be hitting 0.* ratings. I have no idea what's going on with it now though... is it really good or are people watching it in a Musashi sort of "let's see how really shit this gets" sort of way, I wonder.
Also amusing to see Oofuri doing better than DtB, I heard Oofuri is very popular as a fujoshi show and if MADs are anything to go by in terms of gauging popularity then it fits because there's a helluva lot more Oofuri MADs than DtB ones...
