The top ten in "The Top 100 Anime Characters" from the Japanese TV show "kore ga nihon no best 100" that aired on July 7, 2002:
1. Doraemon (Doraemon) 2. Son Goku (Dragon Ball) 3. Totoro (Tonari no Totoro) 4. Lupin III (Lupin III) 5. Char Aznable (Kidousenshi Gundam) 6. Kenshiro (Hokuto no Ken) 7. Asakura Minami (Touch) 8. Lum (Urusei Yatsura) 9. Bakabon's Father (Tensai Bakabon) 10. Norimaki Arare (Dr. Slump Arare-chan) Though, I have many reasons to dispute this ranking due to two reasons: A. It is from a standpoint of Japanese "popular" view rather than Japanese "otaku" view (if it was, it would be Char Aznable, as in Newtype magazine) B. Though I do not dispute that Doraemon will be number one anyway on any other poll, but I have a little doubt that the TV studio may have selected a sample size to skew the vote towards Doraemon rather than Sazae-san or Chibi Marukochan due to the fact that this show was aired on TV Asahi, and Doraemon is also shown on TV Asahi. For reference purposes, I have included this link so that someone will take the time to translate these (and I am not going to take my own time do them) so these topics don't appear again (as I am aware these topics will recur time and time again). That is, of course, they would want to use such a reference in the above mentioned skews that I perceive... Our country has been watching anime (or back then called "TV manga") since the mid 1960s. That means we have approximately two-and-a-half generations worth of anime watchers (whether they stopped watching as they grew older, or not, in addition to current Japanese youngsters). In comparison, in America, anime is still a new "form of entertainment." The majority of the people watching anime in the States are only one generation. But let's be reasonable that I add those people who have watched Speed Racer and Yamato without realizing that they were anime from Japan. That's about 1.5 generations. So you see, it is inevitable that in Japan, most anime characters and shows that you see in the Top 100 will be skewed towards anime that were shown in the 1970s. That is exactly around the time those baby-boomers in 1960s were watching anime as children and youngsters. And with the majority of Japanese being in the age group of 30-60 years old, the animes that are on those top 100 will be skewed towards animes in the 1970s. But then again, those shows are now deemed classics. Some of those animes, like the "World Masterpiece Theater" shows were made by the makers who would later go on to found Studio Ghibli (Takahata Isao and Miyazaki Hayao) |
