Once again I'm forced to recommend Mononoke. One of the best leading men in anime today.
If you like it, it's actually a follow-on to the three episode arc, Bakeneko, that complete the licensed series Ayakashi Samurai Horror Tales. That's licensed, though Mononoke is not.

Gankutsuou - I've had this on my hard drive for such a long time after hearing about how good it was but thinking I would hate it. Finally got around to watching it and I love it. Kind of looking for something that could equal it now. Main characters are male.

Give a hard look at Legend of Galactic Heroes. I see it as basically the animated version of Art of War, The Prince. This is an epic that describes the journey of two extraordinary admirals , one who rose to rid corruption of a failing monarchy and seize the universe, as the other fighting for the survival of a corrupt democracy.
Although in retrospect... this might not be your cup of Russian tea, for it is not filled with Jam or Marmalade, but with Honey.

Since someone mention Kaiji, you could look at Akagi.. It's done by the same creator as Kaiji. It's about a guy (Akagi) who ended up playing mahjong against yakuza. I think most (if not all) the characters are also male.
And another anime with mostly male characters (most of the episodes doesn't feature any female) is Sakigake!! Cromartie Koukou. But it's a comedy anime with high school setting. Very funny though |
