For a second, I thought he looks like a girl there But I gotta agree that he looked more young with his short hairstyle.

So, is it a trend in Japan to cut a sudden haircut because they got dumped? I always notice these from the other manga I read.

I'm pretty sure it's universal, something like "remade yourself differently from the you that was dumped".

I was pretty sure that at one point they where going to use a scene with a childhood friend or relative of Kashiwagi in front of Yuuto, but I also thought that it would have been the real deal and not a misunderstanding

Its not universal. In fact it isnt all too popular in real life. Its just something manga inveted for talentless authors who do not want / are incapable of writing deep character changes themselves so they come up with the visual changes saying that it is reflection of the inner change as well. Its very immature and dumb but its always an easy way out because the character will look different at least (either from long hair it goes short or from short hair it goes long (the latter happens very rarely its usually the long hair gets dumbly cut to short).

It's actually pretty popular in Japan (although it's more of a hair style change), supposing that person was a big part of one's life, and certainly not just something untalented authors use.

I have never heard of it being popular in japan. Popular in Japans media, yep it is, but in actual real life - not really. For me, its a cheap trick when one doesnt want/has no time or simply is incapable of showing the actual personality changes so go with the most visual outer change of the haircut.

it reminds me of when in Ashiteruze Baby (beginning of volume 7) Yoka Maki wanted to give the heroine Kokoro a haircut, either her editor or her sister told her not to do it as it implied a break-up and Maki-chan responded that people get haircuts all the time

Yes, for you perhaps, but I would say people who lived in Japan would know better.

Ironically I have friends in Japan. And they never told me about the haircut significan meaning in the real life. That thing is pushed hard by the media but it isnt really adopted as far as the actual life goes. The haircuts happen but they are usually done without thinking about the new start or breaking ups all that much. What pushes this trope hard is the media but the real life it isnt that far away from western side of the world.
