After reading multiple recommendations in the best unknown manga thread, I decided to give Yakitate Japan a try. Man was it worth it! I felt that this manga was good enough that it warranted its very own thread.

I love all the characters, excpet Yukino who I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE (but you are supposed to hate her, so that's a good thing). I think this manga is really strong because it has such great characters. And the humor. I don't think I've ever laughed so much in any other manga, not even Love Hina. The extreme over-reactions to the bread tasting are just absolutely hilarious. It's weird because it feels that a lot happens in the first 7.5 volumes, and yet it feels like not a whole lot has happened at the same time. The only thing that I feel this manga is missing is...

Oh yeah, and one quick question about the omake. Why does the writer draw himself as a transvestite? Don't tell me he actually IS a transvestite? Not that I have a problem with reading a transvestite's manga or anything, but its just....weird I guess.

I love this manga, too. I'm not really a huge comedy fan so when I find one that works for me, it's pretty special.

It's just such a strange idea and is done so well.

Maybe I'll elaborate later, but I definatly love this manga as the sig will attest.

Just FYI, Yakitate!! Japan won the Shogakukan manga award this year. Basically meaning that it's the best new manga that Shogakukan publishes (or at least they think so).

And I absolutely love it... *sigh*... btw, there is romance involved, but very little, so it's all good for both parties.

YAY! it's award winning

in the respect of trying to satisfy all parties involved, it's really like a typical shounen manga (of course, that's about it, you'd need to take out the premise, the plot, the characters, and the bread to make it "typical")
Ever tried explaining Yakitate to other people? Based on a real conversation:
Me: "Hey i found a great new manga!"
Friend: "Really? what's it about?"
Me: "BREAD!"
Friend: "...dude you're nuts"
Me: "No no it's really cool, it's got bread, and swords, and babes, and...bread..."
Friend: "...it's about...bread....?"
Me: "YEAH!"
*Friend backs away*

I get a lot of weird reactions when i talk about my favorite anime/manga...(Midori no Hibi (one friend called it "Midget Porn"), Yakitate, Kaleido Star, Ranma 1/2, GTO, i don't even bother to talk about Pretty Face anymore....O_O)

Thank you, thank you. But I spent most of my time this month on Ippo, which won't be released for another week or so. So those 12 yaki and everything else are credited to the staffers

i CAN make bread that sends people to heaven though...

supposedly, he's supposed to represent "Generic Cool-guy Gaijin" or something...and it can be difficult to come up with new characters all the time
either that or the artist is making fun of the fact that almost every generic anime/manga gaijin looks exactly the same (i refer you to the american guy, the culture festival gaijin, and the german guy from Azumanga Daioh as an example)

...and we think THEY look the same?

Yeah, it's crazy - of all the cute things that could've become the series' mascot (Koalas, afros, green tutle bread et al), they choose Brad Pitt! They're overusing him because it's funny to see Brad Pitt used in such a wide variety of bizarre situations - especially since it's just that ONE drawing cut and pasted over and over again. I was giggling at just that all the way through the 'lawyer' segment.

I wonder if they had to get permission to draw him.

Anyway, Yakitate is pretty much the funniest manga I've ever read, yet also one of the most inventive and best-drawn. Snoopycool are doing a great job with it!

yep...brad pitt is a pretty stereotypical american pretty boy actor (like Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Toby McGuire, and Leonardo DiCaprio)

I think his back is in there every time the Chinese team is mentioned (same drawing over and over).

Spoiler for Don't read it unless you really want to be spoiled: I NEED MY SHOUNEN/SHOUJO-AI SCENES! I don't care if it's Tsukino and Azuma, Tsukino and Kawachi, even Tsukino and the mushroom head! (haha, poor loser) She's absolutely adorable, I just can't stand her not falling for someone! When I first read the title of one of the chapters in Volume...3 I think and it said "Please go out with me" I thought that was it! I was so ready for it, and then when Azuma asked Tsukino out I was completely taken by surprise (but in a good way!). Then to go and have that turn out to be nothing I just exploded! Please, oh please Tsukino fall for someone! You are too cute and adorable and wonderful to remain a single highschool student! Oh yeah, and one quick question about the omake. Later elaboration: Spoiler: I don't want to see any romance develop in the manga. I just don't think it belongs.
