I am not planning to drop the series over it either. I don't like it but its one unfortunate misstep. In general I liked the interaction between the two main characters.

Yeah, the rape statement was a bit too over-the-top, but when you put it in the context of being said by a guy who thought that gym=naked time, it kinda makes it slightly less disturbing. And it seemed like the girl didn't really believe him either, or else she would've turned tail and ran the second he went solid snake on her. (The box, not the innuendo)

Someone on another forum suggested the rape line is a bad translation -- apparently the term he used can mean rape but also has a more general meaning of, "I'll mess you up." And given the quality of Crunchyroll translations...

They do have a way for you to provide feedback and point out errors in their translation.

From the work of a few people around, "rape" in this translation would be acceptable for what he said. I don't think it's quite as accurate as that, given the implications. From an American English perspective, "Or you'll get f***ed" would probably cover the contexts better.

Even given the dictionary definitions, and the likely colloquialistic nature in Japanese, there is ambiguity but it's a bad outcome and violent, in result. Switching from "rape" to "f***" would add that ambiguity back to the English. Which is something of a hilarious proposition, as I'm arguing the translation would have been "better" if it was, generally considered, more inappropriate to say.

Still, it's mostly beside the point. The point was to shock the reader/audience with Haru's statement and contrast it against his actions right after that. It worked perfectly. So, mission accomplished there. It'll also probably increase CrunchyRoll's viewership of the specific episode. Might even give it enough notoriety that it gets licensed for DVD release (though I don't think the kerfuffle is that big).

True. It's like he doesn't think before speaking or acting. I hope he overcomes this after.

I loved this episode. It's so beautiful, so colorful and the animation is fantastic
As for the characters, Shizuku is interesting. Haru is kind of dumb (hilariously dumb) so I'm looking forward to the evolution of their relationship (and a character develpment for Haru's part, and I WANT THEM TO EXPLAIN WHY THIS GUY WHO'S NEVER AT SCHOOL MADE IT 1ST PLACE IN EXAMS!)

Looking forward to the next episode!

Easter Egg -- the textbook Mizutani-san was working on when she got punched in the face is an English study book, open at lesson 3 entitled "The next monster - episode 1". It looks like a script from the anime in bad English along with her written notes. 20:23 into the episode.

Well this episode proved how easy it is to kidnap people. Just grab someone and nobody notices.....

But what an odd first episode there. Almost seems like this guy needs that kind of weird personality though. Otherwise he'd be an overly athletic person who also happens to be a genius. I'd have to hate the guy if he wasn't absolutely bizarre .

It's a nice show so far, with a few shocking elements that have been mentioned on this board. As long as it keeps up this pace, it should be a joy to watch.

It seems like he is a natural genius or autistic savant. He does not normally study, apparently, but understands things very easily. Hence, his comment that it is not that hard.

It wasn't really clear, but I got the impression that his top marks were from when he entered the school, meaning that his high placement and speech happened before he left school. Of course, given the sort of character he is, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that his little sabbatical completely failed to lower his grades at all, if only because it would probably infuriate the lead girl.

My guess would be that he never even needed to go to highschool, he's so far advanced. But he wanted to make friends so he decided to go to highschool- and then it all ended in disaster on the first day.

Deliciously ironic

The kanji in particular used in the manga was 犯す (okasu). And it just so happens that this could mean to rape; to violate. I imagine if they author wanted to imply "messing someone up," they'd go with 侵す (okasu) instead but that's just based on what on the definitions I've seen. Need a real authentic Japanese speaker to clarify it in the end. This language, man...

I like the manga, and this is a pretty good adaptation so far: very quick, but that works for me in this case. Tomacchan is conveying the lead girl pretty well. And the guy is as in the manga.

I didn't like the "rape" thing, but it was so outlandish that I could manage not to take it seriously. And I suspect it feels different in the Japanese. It did get across how out of it the guy is.
