Unhappy Picky anime watcher (anime which makes you suffer)

Hello fellow anime lovers,

now i have a very picky taste in anime so i am finding it hard to find stuff i can stick to, so if you guys cant help i fully understand. these are the things i am looking for

i like to be able to get emotionally involved with the characters
Dark (demons, supernatural)
make you cry out of utter hopelessness or misery over the situation or suffering to a character you have grown to love (Wolfs Rain is a prime example of this)

i also like emotionless characters with a hidden past which makes them vulnerable you know the types kio out of fruits basket. D of vampire hunter D. sasake in naruto

(eg naruto
Spoiler for Naruto:

i have watched quite a few series but have currently gone blank for names :S

please no manga as i find i am too lazy to read -.- i know im a traitor

will be anticipating your response

thanks for reading

Gex

Grave of the Fireflies is probably the most depressing anime I've ever watched; the fact that it is based on a semi-autobiographical book makes it worse.

Monster. After 2 episodes I would have done anything not to be in the protagonist's shoes. The entire anime's very dark, twisted, realistic and depressng.
Gungrave's protagonist also goes through very hard times and ends up being pretty emotionless; yes it has weird demon things and gangsters too. It's a bit old but awesome.

Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien. It's not dark, but I think it fits the rest and it's a great show

Try Saikano....

If you're not depressed by ep 8, see if you still have a reflection in the mirror...

He could always just stop at episodes 10 or 11.

Kimi ga Nozomu Eien, 5 Centimeters per Second and Voices of a Distant Star come to mind.

Now if u want something more darker and still with that melancholy, saddening feeling maybe Texhnolyze and Gilgamesh.

For emotional, melancholic mood in which the situation is so hopeless (ending doesn't count) that it feels like the world's literally ending, that nothing the characters do can alter it, you have to try Zegapain (and Persona Trinity Soul if you like the former). Zegapain has a mecha/apocalyptic setting with humans not being quite human... well, I can't spoil more. Clues are sprinkled all over the anime. If you want to get to some of the meaty stuff, you've to watch at least past episode 4 (big revelation comes in Ep 6, but even bigger revelations await). I'm putting this here because some people get put off by the mecha fight. But the worth is really worth it.

D.Gray-Man It has demons, violence, an emo with a mysterious past and a few really sad moments.

That fits most of you're criteria doesn't it?
