I think one of Toriko's biggest problem is that it is just so full of testosterone. The girls in it are essentially useless. The only attractive one so far is Melk the second. It would have been nice if she joined up with Toriko and Komatsu. However, this show is still lacking the emotional impact that makes all the other great shounen shows spectacular.
We are 58 episodes in, and all Toriko has been is essentially a fighting anime with a lot of eating. The characters all have potential (except for Zonge... I wish he would die already), so there is a chance the story gets better. I think other things that turn off viewers are Komatsu's whiny voice and unattractive character design. It makes it hard for people in general to sympathize with him. In addition, Komatsu should not be able to survive in the harsh environments that Toriko has gone through. As much as the new knife is divinely powerful, it is still can't keep Komatsu from being squashed by ultra-high gravity. I do believe he has potential to slice a level 100 beast with that knife, however.

In Japan it's really just hitting squarely at the young boys demo, and selling a decent amount of toys.

That was a nice insight episode for Zebra. He's becoming more and more awesome each episode. With that tough guess exterior, he seems to have a truly good heart. Of course, if he ever weeps over a drama movie, I'd probably crack up to no end.

Wow, this thread is alive again.
Komatsu survived yet again with his luck. However, I'm still not sure how he will survive in environments that automatically kill you, like what Toriko went through when he went to Gourmet World. Anyway, what I think this show is really lacking are great female counterparts. Without that, the show's popularity, at least in the western culture and the older population, will not be that high. At least Melk will show up next episode, which is always a plus. She seems like the best female so far in the show, as far as looks and skills. If she joins the regular cast, I'm sure that Toriko will become more popular. However, I get the feeling that the next episode seems like a filler, just from the preview.

Add on top of the character issues, it also lacks the emotional impacts that the other shounen series have. I guess this show is more to watch just for the fun of it, and it does not relate to the viewer as much. It does have interesting ideas; hence, I watch it weekly. I just wish there were more to it, so I can at least discuss it with people. As it stands, this thread lacks discussion as well.
