i dont know about u guys but i definatly noticed that atleast for me,for an anime to be truly sad or moving,it has to have a good OST,think about it,would the scene in elfen lied 13 be so sad without the music?same goes for most anime's like tsukihime OP theme, kimi ga nozomu ein, even code geass in episode 23,in all these animes music plays a really big role in ur mentality.

100% agreement. Music really does move the scene for me. Elfen Lied's ending is very sad for that reason, a lot of Mai Hime towards the end, and Hoshi no Koe to name some that had very moving music that really pushed the sad theme of the scene. The same goes for a lot of non-anime for me as well.

Ciao!

To me its a yes and no, since some series are designed like that, in the end its just depends on the director's choice to deliver the ending the way they want and have the impact the way the want, btw sounds and music is used in series as a mood setting, to set the mood basically, however some do have other uses such as metaphors for plot or character

FMA was the sadist anime i've seen. It has a very angsty feel to it.

Spoiler for Spoiler For FMA Episode 25!!:

Don't underestimate scenes with no background music. They can have just as much impact as scenes with good music depending on how the story was built up to that point. Sometimes music even becomes intrusive to the scene.

I'll have to add the Tomoyo OVA to this list, or rather, my list.

Serial Experiments Lain

Mindfluks aside, don't think that's a sad series? Well try to imagine being a person known by so many one day and then seemingly not exist to anyone in the world by the next day, and tell me you wouldn't feel depressed after all that...

Spoiler for Serial Experiments Lain:

Though I must admit, that last scene with Alice did choke me up a bit.

You get my point though, that from the 4th wall it was kind of despairing to see Lain do that with her memories, though], despite the justification of her actions...

In either case, the original Hellsing TV series is also sad, because GONZO really screwed it up...har har har

I just got into Code Geass and have been watching it non-stop. I'm definitely adding it to the list!

Spoiler for obvious reasons:

update on the music effect, having just finish "Fate/Stay Night" and its theme, (which i found rather sad and unwelcoming but catchy) and the ending of the series .... i didnt think i made much difference in terms of the degrees of 'sadness' the song had and the conclusion of the series, any thoughts?

That's a very depressing and sad film. It feels like historical fiction. The more realistic the anime. The more realistic the sadness for me. I also have to add Berusaiyu no Bara (Rose of Versailles) both the anime and manga series. Another historical fiction series with quite a lot of melancholy and tragedy.
Grave of the Fireflies really wasn't Historical Fiction, it was a Semi-Autobiographical War novel that was made into an animated movie. When I found out these events were based on real ones that made the whole movie that much sadder. The writer Akiyuki Nosaka was the main character and wrote the book as a way of apologizing to his sister for killing her.

Well, I just finished watching all of Code Geass and yeah, it most defiantly pulled more tears from me. Yeah, I guess that wasn't the worse part! That anime was horrible and sadistic...but I loved it!

Moving on to R2 now. I'm pretty sure I'll cry many times over again!
