I have to say, this isn't their best production but the art is really good (KyoAni always excelled on that). However, mystery and anime? No thanks. I'd rather read a real mystery novel. Will be giving this up after 3 eps.

Well, this hardly qualifies as mystery atm. It is my knowledge that the plot thickens after a while with real mysteries, not just finding where a book was during the period it was checked out.

Animation, characters, OP and ED are top notch, and the deduction process Houtarou makes (Along with the images a la Bakemonogatari ) gives this show a different feel.

I for one, am glad that we are finally out of the K-On! Dark ages, back into real anime.

Finally got around to watching this. So far for me, this show feels like Clannad meets Encyclopedia Brown. Which is perfectly fine, as I loved Clannad, and have fond memories of reading Encyclopedia Brown as a child. The gorgeous animation quality certainly doesn't hurt, either.

Will be following this one for sure.

I'm also going to make a stretch here and say part of what keeps Houtarou around/coming back is that, for all of his protestations to the contrary, he actually wants a more active life. The scene in the library particularly shows this; especially taking into account his constant reading. I would guess that as a child he was not particularly athletic, either by predisposition or perhaps extended childhood illness. Young male interaction, in Japan as much as America, has always been primarily physical--racing, sports, general roughhousing (Video-games may be supplanting that in the modern generation, but it would have been true in the authors experience). As he found himself spending more time reading, possibly even puzzle solving, he would have felt himself isolated from his peers. Eventually, he shares little or no common ground with them, and it seems clear that he is not predisposed to taking the kind of risks necessary to find a new place to interact. As a defense mechanism, he defines himself as low-energy and tries to ignore the rest of his peers--there's nothing wrong with them, he's just "different". He's grey and lifeless; while the rest of the world is bright and vibrant. He "doesn't belong", almost code for doesn't know how to fit in, but Eru won't let him just fade out. He see's in her a world he doesn't think he belongs in but wants to; so he keeps coming back to her even though he feels safer hiding. Even if we're looking at metaphorical imagery here; those flower filled vines aren't just pretty--they're his impression of her vibrancy wrapping around him, pulling him closer to what he really wants. As a side note, flowering vines have long been used as a sign of hope and tenacity, life overcoming all obstacles.

Mirrinus: Love the Encyclopedia Brown reference, I had forgotten about those, but your right, it does have some of that feel.

If someone can get me a full size screen cap of the ED, the part where Chitanda lays down on her front (after they "shoot" polaris) I'll get him an internet cookie.

I'm planning on making that my blackberry desktop because I'm fearless

Niker

EDIT: The lyrics for that part are "konya koi ni kawaru"

De-texting it was a pain but here you go.

720p (doesn't look that great cuz not a pro level work at de-texting it)

360p (looks quite good after re-sizing it) perfect for your blackberry.

Takemoto had an interview in the latest Adult Famitsu in a feature about Hyouka. In this interview, it's mentioned that Takemoto was the driving force behind Hyouka getting an anime. After he read the novels a few years ago, he really wanted to make it into one. He said it was difficult to make it into an anime, but he feels he's done a good job. Finally, he says this work is not just a mystery, it's a bittersweet story about the 4 Classics Club members.

Oh, wow. Thanks for this.

Now, I'm curious as to just how bittersweet this show will get.

Well, they did mention that the show would be about the pain of growing up in an earlier interview. I just hope it doesn't reach the level of pathos of AIR(TV), because my heart might not be able to take it.

Cheers.

I was thinking something more along the lines of a psychological trauma to the cast, a la Key.

EDIT: I mean, the last tear jerker I watched was AnoHana, I definately need something to unleash mah tears to

AnoHana had me face palming, not crying. So if we do get some tragedy or something sad, I hope it's legit.

And can someone please make Niker a proper avatar. I can't do GIFs.

In any case, my sadistic me wants to see Eru completely breaking down and crying like a baby.

Anohana was in all glory good but crying every darn episode has it's own downside.

I think it won't get to he level that you will be crying buckets. Well for now I don't see anything that will even give you there's just something on my eye feeling

Well the elements are there.

Take Chitanda. Child prodigy, member of a rising family in town, and we all know how crazy japs are about success. That adds a lot of pressure on her tiny little shoulders. Of course its too early to speculate with anything close to a hypothetical ending, but basing myself on the top comments about Hyouka being about "growing up"...

We know that growing up isn't always a merry little ride.

I feel we should start making our bunkers to prepare for a merde-storm

Incidentally, what would "Hyouka" translate to?
