its a thick broadsword thats more suited to chopping with high mass and density than its sharpness. More than anything its a defensive blade thats used as a shield

Yes, Age, I knew. But do you know how many inertia a fighter plane possess at supersonic speed? Certainly not comparable to bullets at any rate.

Logically, I.S. are protected against MICROmeteorites, which while moving at many times the speed of jet fighter, rarely heavier than several gram. Micrometeorites more akin to Hypervelocity bullets on crack.

By this sense, I.S. barrier are more akin to whipple shield, protect the user from high-kE and low Inertia impact. Because in any sense, I.S. are inertialess due to PIC (Sir Newton prove that during Yamada vs Ling and Cecil)

Even if The I.S. still intact, the pilot certainly will be injured. To prevent lethal injury, absolute defense will be activated, do the math.

would setsura being removable so ichika can use his left hand normally be considered a significant upgrade?

Speed definitely is not the answer, since gas expansion rate limit normal firearm's maximum bullet velocity to ~1850 mps (compare to 3000-18000 mps of space debris). This implies ultra high density bullet, carrying more damage than 20mm Vulcan in much smaller package.

Removable Setsura? Not really that significant, though it will comes handy sometimes. In the first place, Setsura is part of I.S. armor much like Image Interface Weapons.

Dual wielding swords is pretty impractical in real life. The weight alone would mess you up severely.
