Yeah I dled GIMP and gave it a run. Even with your FAQ, I still find it hard to navigate. I'll try out Paint.net, thanks.

@ Eczema

Paint.NET is far more intuitive, but if you ever really must use gimp you can try gimpshop as suggested in the faq.

I don't know if its listed by you can also check out Gimptalk.com
They have a lot of tutorials ranging from beginner to more advanced tutorials. The basic ones
should help with navigating Gimp and some of its tools. ^_^

Spoiler for Size:

Was kind of bored and decided to make a new tutorial, encompassing blending and some smudging.
I have no idea if those are the correct words but I hope it will be of use anyway.

May I just ask one question?
I don't know if it should be here anyway but here it goes:

when you make siggys, you usually save them with max quality right? but when you try to use them here the quality drops a lot... at least for me...

can anyone tell me why is that and how can I fix it? thanks in advance

Yes you get lower file size but the tradeoff is quality (meaning it's a lossy compression).
You can find a more detail view on wikipedia.

Save them on optimised PNG

When you sig is ready go:

File/ Save for Web

Select PNG-8

Save

Of course it's to be remembered that PNG-8 is an 8 bit format meaning that the maximum color count is 256. In effect it's usually the same as saving the sig as GIF though it usually produces slightly larger files. Within the size limits JPG is unfortunately often the only option since PNG-24 tends to bump the filesize quite a bit.

Yeah but optimised PNG-8 has a better quality than JPG

Not necessarily, jpg still owns png-8 in terms of quality. png-24 is the best, but then again, the filesize can bumped up to bmp size.

Ha! How exactly does a PNG-8 with it's measly 8bit of colors (= 256 colors) have better quality then a 8bit/channel JPEG (so 3 x 8bit = 24bit total = truecolor = 16 million colors). PNG-24 beats JPEG, but only when you're working with images of 1megapixel and above.

I see everyone else is debating format differences. How about posting examples so we can see the differences between your max quality signature and the ones you use here? Then we could give you tips on how to help you optimize.

One of the biggest problems/hassles I'm having with creating stuff is the background of a character image that I want to use. I'm currently using Paint.NET and the only solution is to use a tool and manually draw an outline of the character to extract it from the background. This can be tedious at best, but downright hellish on complex pictures. Is there any other way to extract just the character image and not the background for layering?

@Solace: Let's make a comparation then with this sig that I just made (400 x 120)

GIF (30.0 KB)

JPG (13.8 KB)

BMP (140 KB)

PNG-8 (30.7 KB)

PNG-24 (64.8 KB)

So?
