It's kind of funky, though, with the elephants not being able to cross the river and the cannons having to shoot over other things (if I'm thinking of the right game).

move two:
w- doesn't matter as long as you don't block the queen's path to king's rook 5.
b- king's knight pawn to k-k 5
move three:
w- queen to king's rook 5 :checkmate
check it for yourself
oh, that! I was mistaking 3 move checkmate with the pawn/bishop/queen checkmate as well. ^_^;;

I've read about that checkmate once before, but shrugged it off as trivial and irrelivent considering the likelyhood of anyone moving those 2 paticular pawns in that fasion is quite low. A good player will have a set opening to patch up expliots in the formation and most newbies do 1 of 3 things at the start (mimic their opponent, move their rook pawns to move rooks out, aimlessly jump the river with both knights.) So thusly, only a player that moves pawns out randomly at the start is likely to make this mistake and the odds of the player doing this is about 6% depending how you look at it (upto 12.5% if you're a good bluff).

I learned how to play chess probably back when I was in grade 6, and I was in the chess team back then. Although I think I lost interest pretty soon and didn't really play it much afterward.

I also prefer Go over chess, the fact that you have much more freedom in what you can do (e.g. ko-fight, cool move like the Tengen opening). Although I don't really have time to play Go either.

Chess is fun. My friends are not...it's sad to say that I hang out with people that doesn't appreciate chess.

Unfortunately, I've been graced with opponents that are my brothers. So in my world; I'm master - technically unbeatable. Kinda does wonders to my ego...no matter how delusional I am. :P

But I know I suck. Lala. I am a newbie and I have yet to read Chess for Dummies or Dummies 101...heck I don't even know the 3-step move...

Chinese Chess is cool too!

Does anyone know if chess the game helped in founding the board game Stratego? I barely ever play board games, except Trivial Pursuit on holidays with the family, but I remember back when I was in 4th grade I used to play Stratego all the time. Looking back on it, it's an awesome game! It's similar to chess, just far more complicated. That's probably why I was better. Simple games like chess allow players to create these complex strategies that very rarely change game to game, which I don't like.

I play football. That's kind of like chess.

just basically exploiting a diagonal path to which once the 2 pawns next to the king are moved, leaves no escape from checkmate. But not knowing that checkmate is rather irrelivent to a person's skill considering it's ease of use. Most people that know of it have read WAY too many guides on chess or have been incredibly bored and thought up bullshit senerios.
