I honesty think that some people are being just a little too harsh on Rumiko Takahashi.

@usopsama: What you've described is basically every single shonen series out there where the hero is weak. The only difference is that Naruka is getting more buff too, instead of a constant stream of constantly buffer villains.

@NoSanninWa: I don't think that Takahashi is a bad shonen writer (actually, quite far from it). It's just that she is terribly out of her element with Inuyasha.

What Takahashi is best at, is character development and quirky humour. Inuyasha has been lacklustre at both of them, and that's partially due to the structure of the series, especially in comparison to her prior work. The humour is not there, the characters are static, and Takahashi has never been good at writing series that proceed chronologically (Maison Ikkoku had chronological progression, but it was a background element at best). Takahashi writes episodically because that's where her style thrives. Trying to port that style to something like Inuyasha just doesn't work out very well, where things need to constantly progress. Hell, I (and I think that even she has voiced this opinion as well) think that Inuyasha is far and away her worst work to date, and it's mainly because she isn't doing what she's good at.

There are other issues with Inuyasha as well. The unoriginal characters for one. Ranma -> Inuyasha, Akane -> Kagome, Ryouga -> Koga, except nearly all of the characters in Inuyasha are flatter than their Ranma counterparts. The length is just way too long, and the plug should've been pulled much earlier. The biggest fault for Takahashi is that she should've recognized that Inuyasha was new territory for her, and should've had the guts to wrap it up when she knew it wasn't working (which she didn't do).

I know that Rumiko's planning on stopping InuYasha at 500 chapters, so it's pretty close to being over completely.
But InuYasha was my favorite anime and manga series until the anime ended. It will always be one of my favorites, but I have other favorites now, too.

I don't really have any complaints other than the fact that it was kind of long with seemingly no point... But I loved it. ^^

Aw, Inuyasha's my first serious anime obsession. Yes, it's gone too long, yes there are too many filler chapters. But in the end, I mean to see it through to the end.

Besides, I think it's gotten very interesting of late. Those who have given up on the story don't know what they're missing.

I don't think that was ever more than a vague "around 500 chapters" comments years ago, and I don't think we're anywhere close to the end...

Speaking of Sesshomaru, what part does Rin play in his life? Why is he so attached to her, even though I know she saved his life (kinda) once? She IS a human, after all! As a self-professed hater, he goes against his mother to save Rin, and keeps on rescuing her, despite his primary goal of simply gathering power so that he can have a kingdom he can rule...

Any thoughts? Clues? I may have missed something...I've missed the last couple of books and I don't have a constant translation source since "scroll 500."

Could it be possible that Rin has some sort of connection to Kagome of the future? Wouldn't be odd if Rin was an ancestor of Kagome???

My husband suggests that...for some reason...Sesshomaru has offspring with Rin (in the future) and those offspring result in Kagome many many generations in the future...

Shrug.

Yeah, there is that. Rin certainly is the Human that his father wanted him to Want to Protect. Well, not specifically, but you know what I mean.

Rin is just CUTE. And she helps Sesshomaru show off a different side....

Never thought about that being a possiblity. Pretty cool theory though. Hopefully more light is revieled on the whole Rin/sesshomaru thing at some point.
