i don't know the first person i thought she looked like was Flay maybe it's because of the hair but they look very similar.

That's proof that Hirai's style is just too confusing... but yeah, snipy also told me that she thought it was fllay.
But no way Fllay's gonna work for the pink devil princess.

I agree. Shop any Hirai artwork onto another Hirai artwork, they would still look the same whatever happens.

Actually, that pic isn't even in Hirai's style. The eyes, nose and mouth are all wrong if you compare it to real Hirai art...

In fact, Hirai's style is pretty difficult to duplicate, so if you have a good grasp of his works, they are easily distinguishable... Most of Seed's animators have trouble duplicating it, so its always possible to spot those scenes that Hirai himself was in charged of, and those that other chief animators were.

In regards to getting fanwork = Hirai artwork, yes, that's right, it's hard to find good Hirai style fanwork. But Hirai's work is interchangeable with Photoshop, i.e., Photoshopping Lacus' head onto a Fafner military girl outfit, for example, or having similar hairstyles that it won't do much damage because for some strange reason, they look completely at home on the bodies they were 'shopped onto.

Oh yeah, that's definitely true... In fact, I wonder if Hirai doesn't just do that himself, since all of his faces always look the same... And I mean 100% the same, with no variations, with a unique face for each viewing angle...

And I just started watching Heroic Age and GOOD GOD Shinn lives yet again, this time with blue-eyes ...Shinn's in GSD, Fafner, and Heroic Age...Take that haters xD....

I guess Shinn would not be called as a fail in the character department right now. At least in the character LOOKS department. LOL.

I wonder why Hirai likes repeating character designs though... I would not be surprised if any new characters introduced in the SEED movie would have lookalikes from the old cast again.

I would say that Kazuki lives in GSD and Heroic Age. Or if is that guy from ova who also look Shin and I guess Shin lives in the Fafner OVA and Heroic age.

To be fair, Hirai is one designer that has that kind of privilege to need not vary. Well, depending on the studio and the staff at least.

After all, his designs are one of the hardest to truly emulate, especially when we can see a relatively noticeable degree of difference from the lineart whenever different animators/animation directors take helm in animating his style as opposed to something like say, Code Geass where difference between Chiba Yuriko and other's style compared to Kimura's are less apparent in their difference. Though I personally prefer Chiba Yuri's over Kimura's himself in terms of Code Geass. Kimura's better when he doesn't try to restrict himself to the CLAMP-ish style in my opinion.

I really liked Hirais work in Ryvuis and Scryed but ever since SEED it's like he's been dialing it in.

Yeah, his characters actually looked unique back then, with the main characters each having a different face and such... Lately, he's just using his standard big eyes face for just about everybody.

IMO Shinn would have been better received had he received Kazuma's face or something.

To be fair with Hirai though, its the director's duty to give design guidelines and to approve character designs, so perhaps a reason for Hirai's loss of originality was Fukuda himself. (and the designs in Fafner and HA are a result of Xebec's guys trying to rake in Seed's success...)
