Uematsu's kinda gone downhill for awhile now. FF6 represented his golden age of compositions and while FF7 lapsed somewhat, he rebounded quite well with FF8. Now? I'm not quite enthralled with his works since I found Blue Dragon to be wanting. Enjoyable for short spurts, but I wouldn't listen to it from cover to cover.
Hamauzu and Sakimoto claim the throne for me. Sakimoto never ceases to amaze me with how expressive his themes are in conveying the scope of the game, ranging from the epic like FFTactics, to the whimsical, like Opoona. Hamauzu's also got some nice soundtracks, especially with Unlimited Saga and Saga Frontier II. I'm really having high hopes for the FF13 soundtrack since that one sounds especially promising from the trailer music we've heard so far. Shoutout goes to Daisuke Ishiwatari for making some of the best rock VGM ever. Guilty Gear XX is still a favorite of mine, and I hope to be able to listen to Blazblue in short order.

Favourite Composers:
- Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy series) - Jeremy Soule (The Elder Scrolls series, Knight of the old Republic) - Harry Gregson-Williams (Metal Gear Solid Series, has also done a lot of compositions for famous movies) - Hitoshi Sakimoto (Final Fantasy XII, Vagrant Story, Breath of Fire V) If I had to pick just one, I´d probably go for Nobuo Uematsu, simply because he´s done sooo many pieces for the Final Fantasy series, and I have yet to find any title I don´t like. Favourite OSTs: - Final Fantasy VI - Final Fantasy X - Morrowind - Metal Gear Solid 3 Favoure Themes: - Aria de Mezzo Carattere (FF6) - Ending Theme (FF6) - Terra´s Theme (FF6) - One-Winged Angel (FF7) - Liberi Fatali (FF8) - To Zanarkand (FF10) - Suteki Da Ne (FF10) - 1000 Words (FF10-2) - Somnus Nemoris (FFvs13) - Morrowind Main Theme (Morrowind) - Metal Gear Solid Main Theme (Metal Gear Solid series) - Snake Eater (Metal Gear Solid 3) - Way to Fall (Metal Gear Solid 3) - Father and Son (Metal Gear Solid 4) - The Opened Way (Shadow of the Colossus) - Dreams of the Shore Near Another World (Chrono Cross) - Metroid Prime Main Theme (Metroid Prime) - Origin (Breath of Fire V) - Dr. Wiley´s Stage 2 (Megaman 2) - Big Blue (F-Zero) - Devils Never Cry (Devil May Cry 3) - Overworld (The Legend of Zelda) At this place I´d like to suggest this video: http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=d7_bNWoqxsw (don´t mind the bad VA) :O

Yoko Shimamura should seriously be on this list.. her work on SF2 is timeless (Ken and Guile's themes are so good), not to mention her amazing work on Parasite Eve, Legend of Mana and Kingdom Hearts. Really looking forward to seeing what she comes up with during this year for The 3rd Birthday, The Last Ranker and Final Fantasy XIII Versus.

& yeah, it's a crime she isn't on this list, though i can think of a number of composers who should be.

Yeah, it's a real horrible list. I lean too much towards Japanese VGM composers especially JRPG music composers, and my knowledge of Western VGM is non-existent.
Looking back on this thread, I doubt any poll would be sufficient. There's simply too many good composers to choose from. Now ranking them, who knows. I should have made a better OP. |
